Reversing Camera, Lens cover.

My Yaris cross, a 2022 Design has the same annoying problem as my previous Corolla. The spray from the road hits the camera lens and makes the picture distorted and at times useless. Does anyone know if there is a shroud that fits over the lens to help prevent this? My Corolla was exactly the same. I have now got the habit of every time I pass the rear of the car, I wipe the lens. Unfortunately as we spend more time driving forward, so often if I need to reverse the lens is covered again. Hopefully someone out there has solved this?

Hi John, It's not a permanent fix but have you tried to apply a water and dirt repellent product like Rain-X or Aquapel to the lens after cleaning it. These can help make the lens more resistant to road spray and easier to wipe clean. I get the same problem occasionally on mt Auris depending on road and rain conditions. Hope this heps:smile:

Hi Bper, thanks for your input.  When I had my Corolla Hybrid I tried that off and on but not much better than  the wipe routine if at all. I am thinking of trying to make a shroud from a bit of Pipe. After soaking in hot water to soften then slide over the lens surround and cutting to length Trial and error I suppose whether to angle a cut and when it would interfere with the Camera lens field of vision. Either  not many are bothered by this niggle or accept the annoyance as you are the only one replying so far. At least I am not travelling at speed in reverse.

Hi John, its possible to come up with a number of ideas to shroud the camera but as you have already said field of vision problem, and fixing something into position that won't look like a dogs dinner. As politicians like to say i refer you to my previous answer

It is annoying and like you I try and give it a wipe when I'm there (in wet weather).

It's not just the Yaris that suffers - every car I've had with a rear camera has suffered to some extent.

@Bper has covered the problems with trying to improve this. The best solution would be a box with a flat, clear face over the camera and a tiny wiper - like some CCTV cameras have.

I reverse parked today using the red  guide bar.  I stopped when red bar was on the white bay marker.  I had about 2 feet clear.   The view angle is pretty large.

Mazda had a camera with a "puffer" that blew a shot of air onto the lens when selecting reverse.

Try some ceramic polish/coating/detailing used on car paintwork that causes water to bead and run off.

Always wondered about the red line trigger point and if it varies from model to model by much.

I quite like the ones that pop out when reverse is engaged and pop back in when not - Protects them from the elements, but one more thing to potentially go wrong!

I wonder if anyone's invented a shutter for them that can be retrofitted, triggered by reverse power...

When you do your morning “walk around” your car just lick your thumb and wipe the rear, side and front cameras.

There are warnings in the handbook about using the guidelines on a slope and on acute angles to an obstruction.

I think the parallel lines can be in error to a small degree and the vertical could be out too.  Really a question of trial and (avoid) error.

Yes, I wipe the lens Every time I pass not just in the morning. One trip is enough to get the lens mucky. I also Asked Mr  Toyota but their Customer service doesn't think it's a problem so haven't got a fix other than Clean it!! C'mon you inventors out there, Money to be made. "Dragons Den " for someone?

Yaris Cross Icon 2022 - never had a car where the back gets dirty so quickly. The rest of the car can look reasonably presentable with the back and the camera covered in dirt.

The other thing I have noticed is that if I reverse into a parking space using just the lines on the camera image to get square, I end up not lined up parallel and the nose  pointing at a jaunty angle to the right.
