Spoke too soon, won't work wirelessly today. Perfect via cable???

Probably the same issue as raised by Roy124. You need to make sure your phone is set to "Start Android Auto Automatically".

I'd have even settled for a non-wireless charging black rubber mat but instead we get nothing which, IMO, makes the car look cheap.

You can usually buy a length of rubber mat from car accessory shops. Cut it to fit the space and it makes a nice finishing touch.

Finally sorted, first of all, android auto connected via cable. Pressed on screen settings and there it is,start AA automatically. I was looking on my phone for this, when all the time it was on car screen.

Tried different scenarios, phone bluetooth off, media set to radio  etc, loads via bluetooth every time now!

Thanks again to forum help. I was headed back to the dealer. No doubt they wouldn't have had a clue?

You can buy cheap mats sourced from China. The kit includes mats for the cupholders and for the door bins. The point being, you need to buy tat from China to finish off a £30k car? The cost cutting is all too apparent on these cars yet they're not cheap.

I think the recent breed of cheap EV's that have recently been in the headlines over here is going to cause Toyota sleepless nights because if they don't reduce the price and sell it for what it actuallly is, Toyota are going to loose out. If you're going to sell a £30k car then at least make it look £30k worth.

Toyota was never the cheapest one in its class and the engine reliability (not the interior or bodywork quality) caused them to keep their value for so long. Also remember that 30k today is not 30k from 5 years ago.

The only cheap EVs are either very function-limited or from China and those are cheap for a reason...

What you're paying for with Toyota is for better quality parts - Of all the car manufacturers, Toyota is one of the few where it's almost always better to get the OEM parts, whereas with a lot of other manufactures, third-party parts are often better than the factory parts.

It's even simple things like them using better quality japanese capacitors and switches instead of shoddy chinese ones on their circuit boards.

All that stuff adds up, and they have to choose to bump the price up or try and cut costs where they feel isn't as important hence the tendency to use hardwearing but cheap feeling materials inside.

Anyway, if you prioritise that sort of thing over solid mechanicals but at similar cost, the french and german manufacturers have you covered. If you want it all cost be damned, there's Lexus.

Basically, in the triangle of Plushness, Reliability and Cost, you get to pick two at the expense of the other one.

It's on both - on the phone you can choose the option to have the phone start AA or to have the car start it.

My VPN supplier says they don't currently have the option to add AA to the split tunnel list but it is on their development wish list. Internet research highlights general frustration wth the fact that AA cannot bypass a VPN although I did find one reference to the Google One VPN being able to handle it. Well, I suppose they have an advantage over the others being all the same company.

Yes found it now on my phone on AA bluetooth settings. Thanks for the guidance!

Back in the car, AA setup and running wirelessly.   I have yet to disconnect or power off.  However I have introduced one quirk.

My WiFi shows up as Toyota Smart Connect via Android Auto.

If I now try and connect to Nextbase Wi-Fi it connects and immediately reverts to Toyota.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are trying to do. Once AA has connected to the car, you should put the phone aside. The phone becomes a data source for the car's multimedia system so you do all the data selection on the head-end screen.

@TopGeek Nextbase dash cam 380Gwx has no screen to look at videos incar you stop the dash cam recorder,  start the Dashcam WiFi,  and then connect your phone to the Dashcam WiFi.   Nothing to with AA.

For AA you as you say.

So, while stopped and AA not on, my phone is nevertheless connected to Toyota SmartConnect, a setting I made trying to get a WiFi connection to AA.

In phone settings Nextbase is shown as an available WiFi.   I select this but it automatically reverts to Toyota.   That is the wrinkle.

AA settings,  or at least one, is incompatible with Nextbase.
