Avensis to buy

I've put a post in the Corolla forum about Corolla vs avensis. I want a cheap reliable estate. We will only do about 5k miles mainly local with the odd longer family trip and the kids will use it to go to festivals

I am think I am right that pre 2007 the diesels have no dpf so happy to consider a diesel

What do you think of this one

Older Toyota  cars especially in UK suffer from corrosion, some cars are so badly rusted that won’t be able to pass next mot.
This should be your major concern about when buying a Toyota older than 10 years. Anything else can be fixed but rust it’s a real car killer.
Either of Corolla or Avensis will be a good car, Avensis has more space but both models can be badly rusted if used regularly on motorways during winter or bought from sea regions. Double check mot history and good look under the car are very important steps.

I bought a 2010 1.8 petrol Valvematic T27 estate 3 years ago, been a great car, 50mpg on a motorway can access all clean air zones. I wouldn't go for a TD unless you really have to. You say your annual mileage will be low so a less complex petrol would be my recommendation. Bulletproof as long as they have been well serviced. Careful with the higher miles stuff as they may have been taxi's.  Try and get one with some nice kit, Air Con, Cruise etc.  Good luck.

Hi Peter, pre 2009 It was less common to find DPFs in diesel cars, especially for older models. There might be some exceptions where manufacturers included them earlier to meet upcoming regulations or improve fuel efficiency.

From 2009 onwards In most countries with stricter emission standards, diesel cars manufactured after 2009 around Euro 5 regulations typically have DPFs installed as standard equipment.

There can always be exceptions, so check for a DPF specifically on the car you're interested in.

You can also look in the Owner's Manual, this is probably the best source. It has been known for some manufacturers to put stickers indicating that it has a DPF. You could also give Toyota a ring and ask about the year you are interested in.

As far as the car you are interested in it appears to have been well looked after. As Tony above has mentioned rust may well be a major factor especially with a car of this age. Gather as much information as possible about the car, previous MOTs etc to see if any rust issues have been mentioned.Hope this helps, good luck.

Lower support arms are particularly susceptible to rust in my experience...
