Doing high mileage occasionally on a 1.0litre Toyota vitz

Hi there, I am about to purchase a 1.0 litre japanese import Toyota Vitz. On weekdays I have a relatively short commute to work which is about 4km(2.5miles)each way and possibly other errands within a small town which will probably get me to 50km(31miles)a week. Maybe once or twice month I might head down to my home town via a motorway and it’s going to be about 170km(105miles) one way  on Irish roads. I just wanted to ask the more experienced drivers, will this be too much stress on the small engine? Would it be better to get a bigger car in terms of engine size or am I exaggerating?

Hi mate, I’ve had multiple yaris’ over the last three years, I drive from cornwall to bristol and back every couple weekends and never had any problems with any of them. Sure the revs might sit around 3.5k at motorway speeds but thats the same for most small cars and for a car its size they're relatively quiet and comfortable so I wouldn’t worry

Only if you let it get low on oil or coolant (or put the wrong fuel in it).

No problems with small engine cars. As long as you drive sensible the small engine cars can last long too.
Here an example One of my favourite small car and engines

Used to do that in a 1962 Mini.

Check oil AND coolant EVERY week. If you get radiator damage and do not notice it, you can do a lot of engine damage through overheating. Look under engine for leaks regularly.

(I blew up the engine  big style at 70 mph due to a coolant leak and overheating engine - no temperature gauge.  Conrod tried to get through the block and succeeded. Stone had punctured radiator )

It’s amazing how clean that engine is and how little wear is visible to the naked eye. It obviously has been serviced by book. Apart from the piston side skirts it looks in great shape and would not be expensive to get it  into good working condition again.
