Handbrake

I remember how shocked some of my occasional passengers were, when they noticed that I pull a handbrake while waiting on a red light with neutral (manual) gear.

I was a member of the handbrake+neutral club when I drove a manual!

Sadly the club only had maybe 7 members...

I think aside from Learners, it was extremely rare to see other road users doing that (You can tell from the sea of brakelights! So much so I always got a bit excited if I saw someone without their brakelights on, although half the time it would turn out that was just because their brakelights weren't actually working...), but I'm told even learners are not taught to do handbrake and neutral nowadays! :confused1:

It's a dying tradition!

my favourite misuse of language “shocked”

I'm really sorry, English is not my native language and I'm still learning how to use it. What would be the correct term, may I ask? Because if I understood correctly, this word - according to Merriam Webster dictionary - defines shocked as "affected by shock" and "shock" is defined as "a sudden or violent mental or emotional disturbance". Where " a state of profound depression of the vital processes associated with reduced blood volume and pressure" comes second.

Still a member of that club myself,re the brake lights,it is such a lot of fun for motorcyclists aka bikers when it's raining, and their visor is covered in rain, nearly dark, and super bright eye level lights in their eyes at a lengthy stop, say a level crossing.

Still, sounds like there's no choice now though.

Don't worry about anchs, as I believe the longest serving forum member he's also our unofficial officially designated forum grump and is allergic to hyperbole

The EPB for example on the Avensis is one of the worst EPB i have come across newer Toyota's have a motor on the caliper with no major electronics under the car and are far simpler to service, only time and mileage will tell - a manual release would be ideal, cost savings killed that off

You are not alone, the tabloids use it for the price of carrots but looking at the definition above, do you think it’s appropriate for seeing someone using a handbrake.  Surprised would not carry the same drama but is perfectly adequate.

would it have been a better idea not to have them and just have the standard manual handbrake.?

As well as potentially being cheaper/simpler to manufacture, they fix a problem that forum members/enthusiasts seldom have (or admit to having), which is that disc brakes need a lot more pressure to work than drums and with most cars now having discs all round setting the parking brake firmly enough to hold on a hill, for example, can be challenging.

Given ageing western populations* this is a real and present danger as accidents have already happened. Using a power operated brake removes the person from the equation - aside from forgetting to set it of course.

( * You probably won't believe it will happen to you but I have just replaced my 20+kg gross suitcase with two 10kg ones because on a recent holiday I was struggling to get it onto racks, scales, etc, and it was only part full at about 16kg. When I got it 8 years ago I could (just) heft it at 20kg. Similarly I buy water softener salt in 10kg packs rather than the 20s I used to. Getting old sucks a bit. I can remember getting 50kg bags of cement for a bit of DIY - though to be honest I could only just lift them and stagger to where I needed them 😢 )
