Hi All From a New Yaris Owner!

Having just bought a new Yaris and stumbled across the Owners Club thought I'd join it and say hello!

The Yaris will be setting a lot of firsts for me - first ever new car, first hybrid, first ever automatic - so looking forward to the experience. And in particular I'm really interested to see what sort of fuel economy you can squeeze out of a hybrid!

To explain - about 25 years ago I used to have to commute 100 miles a day, back and forwards between Milton Keynes and Coventry. I did that journey daily for about 5 years and got extremely good at squeezing my then Ford Focus' mpg - used to average around 48-50mpg out of it. Not bad when the journey involved motorway sections - amazing what dropping, or increasing your motorway speed by ~3mph did to fuel economy - and lots of roundabouts involving the inevitable efficiency costs of accelerating and decelerating at them.

20 years later my wife bought her first ever new car - a Ford Puma - mild hybrid - and we only manage to squeeze about 55mpg out of it. Amazing. 20 years of engine refinement and car development and it seems that almost all of the efficiency gains in the motor have gone to powering the electronics rather than actually moving the vehicle efficiently 😆.

Anyway, looking forward to driving a hybrid and lurking on these forums!

Ha ha snap! Same with me, also first ever new car, first hybrid and first ever automatic I've owned!!

I'm sure you'll love it - It's extremely punchy and responsive unlike any other automatic I've driven (Which is mainly why I stuck to manuals for so long).

It's also the first car I know of that could beat my old Yaris Mk1 diesel for fuel economy - I'd regularly get low-mid 60s in that without trying too hard, but in this new Yaris hybrid I'm easily getting low-mid 70's, and the few times I have tried to be good I've had it into the low-80's!! I don't get that often though because I tend to accelerate far too hard in this car because it feels so fun, and resisting that is difficult

But the fact that I can drive like that and still get mpg in the 70's regularly is a testament to how insane this car is - It still makes me chuckle a bit when I fuel up and it clicks off at 26-28L, yet I've covered 400 miles

The only gripe I will say there is a much bigger mpg difference in this car than my previous ones - Summer gives ridiculous mpgs, but winter mpgs can seriously crater if you're using the heating and only driving short distances or slow speeds.

Hi Giulio,

Welcome to our forum, I owned a 2016 Yaris auto hybrid years ago, I was amazed how I did fit in it, as I am a big/tall guy, how it drives,  and mainly the fuel consumption was my best one, I loved it, I only replaced it with a LEAF, when the TFL informed me to start paying the CC in Central London, otherwise it's a lovely car indeed...

Congratulations and enjoy it.
