Yaris Cross electric hand brake

The issues with parking paw breaks and Priuses been most likely because some drivers hit the P button while driving slow and the car in these scenarios will select P and stop unexpectedly and sharply with risk of breaking the transmission paw.  I did that stupidly thing too bit luckily nothing broke. At speeds 10mph and over pressing accidentally P does nothing but at lower speeds will do.

So the two scenarios I remember causing it were getting rear-ended, which thankfully meant the other person was liable for the cost, and someone who'd been parking on an incline for years and never had a problem but then one day it just snapped.

Not just Toyotas by any means. It's never been a big issue for me. They don't seize or jam, it's just a bit alarming when you go to move off and there's a pause then a slight ***** accompanied by a clunk.

That used to be the issue on my previous car a Nissan Qashqai. On my Yaris Cross, the hand brake is applied when putting the selector in park and disengages when moving to drive. Being an auto, you must have your footbrake so no chance of moving forward inadvertantly.

In the U.S. it's usually referred to as the Emergency Brake.  Amazing how many US movies & shows you see where people slam the car into "P" and it's rocking on the pawl

That actually makes some sense. Parking doesn't really constitute an emergency.
