I have a 2011 rav 4 2.2 d-cat that broke down with no warning tried starting it and got loads of white smoke out of the air box, it is currently with steven eagle toyota and have said its the injectors and will be £3700 for 4 new injectors new ecu and dpf clean out,  now i did have a 2.2d-cat verso which has the same engine in which had 4 new injectors £2000 in total but did not have new ecu fitted this was 3 years ago and toyota had to replace them 3 times under guarantee.   as they are quoting £1300 just for the ecu saying toyota head office say u need to fit new ecu with injectors now. if i don't have the ecu will it affect my guarantee if the injectors fail / many thanks andy.

IMHO they are having your pants down so go to a good independent garage or diagnostic centre, those prices are ridiculous for such a car of circa 13years old. (don't know the mileage?) More to the point for that quoted cost, count your losses scrap it as there are cars out there to be bought for similar money.

But what do I know, I'm just a careful Yorkshireman that used to be in the business 🤭

Hi Andrew, your 2011 RAV 4 2.2 d-cat broke down with white smoke from the airbox. Steven Eagle Toyota diagnosed faulty injectors and quoted £3700 for replacements, a new ECU and DPF cleaning. Previously, your 2.2d-cat Verso had injector replacements for £2000 (without a new ECU) and Toyota replaced them three times under warranty. Now, they claim a new ECU is required and replacing injectors alone voids the warranty

I would ask Steven Eagle for details on the diagnosis. What tests confirmed faulty injectors and the need for a new ECU?

Get a second opinion from another Toyota dealership on repairs and warranty. It might be an idea to phone some independent garages specialising in Toyota diesels for potentially lower cost injectors replacements without a new ECU. It's unclear why replacing injectors alone would void the warranty. Contact Toyota head office directly to understand the ECU requirement and warranty terms. It may take time but it will possibly save you money by not rushing into accepting the quote without confirming the above. Hope this helps:smile:

thank you, its done 80,000 miles and toyota say if i dont have the ecu then the injectors wont be guaranteed.because its a new requirement for injector replacment. the only problem i have is last time i had the injectors done it had 3 sets of injectors in that year and covered by toyota if it was a local garage i would worry about if things go sideways.

Hi Andrew,It's not uncommon for the ECU to be replaced along with other major engine components like injectors, especially if there have been recurring issues. In some cases, the ECU may need to be reprogrammed or replaced to ensure proper communication and functionality with the new parts. However, it's always a good idea to confirm with the dealership or a good mechanic if the ECU replacement is necessary in your specific situation.

You are right that if you have it repaired at a local garage about things going sideways but in all fairness I would way up the cost of both and ask a local garage what guarantee they can offer. However it comes down to how much you are reasonably prepared to spend and by how much the quotes vary in price.
