Considering Buying a Toyota Yaris II 1.33 Dual VVT-i

Hello guys,

I hope everyone is doing well.

I have decided to buy a Toyota Yaris 1.33 Dual VVT-i T Spirit Euro 5 or Euro 4 and spend a maximum of £4000.

I choose to go for this car because the Insurance Group is 08E or 07E and the Road Tax is £35 per year, and also due to its good fuel consumption.

I had a look on YouTube, and by the looks of it, it is easy to change the engine oil, oil filter, air filter, and pollen filter on this model.

I have a couple of questions:

With £4k, the car will have between 54,000-70,000 miles, and I might need to change the coolant and spark plugs as well. In terms of the manual gearbox with 6-speed, can you guys please tell me how long the clutch will last? I was amazed to see some cars with the clutch replaced around 75,000-85,000 km, and I wondered why they had to change it.

I can't really tell if the catalytic converter is near the engine in a hard-accessible place for the thieves to cut it easily, maybe someone will know exactly where the CAT is located.

I am planning to use the Shell engine oil 0W-20 ECT C5. I hope someone can confirm that this is a good oil to use for my Yaris.

By the looks of it, the Yaris will have only rear parking sensors, AC, electric windows on the front and fog light as standard, and it should prove to be a good small, reliable car if properly maintained. I don't think too many things can go wrong with the small Yaris.

The car will have a timing chain, and if I do 8,000-mile oil changes and use good-quality oils, I expect the engine to last a long time.

Any input will be much appreciated.

Have a lovely evening.

Kind regards,

Andrew

I use to have a 2014 reg 1.33 VVT-i euro 5 petrol car.

I just used 0w30 or 5w30 oils

For the transmission I used gear oil GL4 75w80 oil every 4 years.

Spark plug TYPE SC16HR11    torque 17Nm life of plugs 30,000 to 80.000 miles

Gap at 1.1mm

I still hope to get 200k plus from a Toyota with regular oil changes.

I wouldn't recommend a Mk2 with that engine; They have a known issue with piston rings letting in oil; If you do go to buy one, ask to see the maintenance history paperwork first, or get the registration and contact Toyota for information, either way, you're trying to find out if it had the engine work done to fix the problem; If it didn't, don't get it or you'll risk needing to top off the oil ever couple weeks. At its worst, my old one was getting through something like a litre a month IIRC!

The models with the older 1.3L engine, whilst being more expensive to tax, have a much stronger reliability record.

I think 200k miles is achievable from these engines with the right maintenance. My 2010 Mk2 has 138k miles and still runs well when using an oil additive after each oil change. The overall quality feels more durable than the Mk3.

The Mk2 is very cheap to run and I get a reasonably high mpg figure on a long run, the best being 64.2 mpg so far. The 6th gear makes long distance cruising more relaxing at motorway speeds.

I may decide sell my Mk2 later this year after it's been MOT'd. I currently only do around 2k miles per annum due to working from home.

The car nut guy on Youtube mentioned that the petrol engine could suffer from piston rings allowing oil to leak if maintenance isn't done properly (using cheap oil and extending oil intervals). The last ring on the pistons was jammed and wasn't moving properly, result of poor maintenance causing a dent in the cylinder walls. This leads to excessive oil top-up. Despite having less than 150k miles, the oil changes were only done at the Toyota dealership every 10k miles. It's likely that engines under such conditions are prone to these types of issues. Overall, I can't afford an expensive model due to budget constraints, especially considering the significant increase in road tax and insurance costs. I'll aim to find a car with a full service history and low mileage, hoping for the best around £4000. It's challenging to find a car in perfect condition at this budget. I can't even find a similar car to the Yaris II with its strong reliability record.

What oil were you using in your Yaris II after 100k miles?

Currently using Castrol Magnatec Stop Start 5W30, and was previously using 0W20 as per recommendations.

No need to take a gamble. Bear in mind what others on this thread have mentioned regarding oil consumption with this particular engine. Do your research and try and find one with no underbody corrosion. I've always jet washed the underside of my one and it's never had any MOT advisories for corrosion. Crawl underneath the car when viewing and use a torch to locate any corrosion or fluid leaks.

Good morning, everyone,

Could someone please tell me if this 15 plate car will have the same engine as the 11 plate car?

I assume that even with this many miles, this 15 plate car will still have at least 100k miles of life left if it was properly maintained at the dealership and doesn't have any oil or coolant leaks. On a 15 plate car, rust should not be an issue at all, I would say. What do you guys think about buying a car with high mileage?
