Gas pedal switch

Hello,

I have bought a 2010 Auris with 1.8 litre petrol engine and manual transmission.

Yesterday when i fully pressed the accelerator pedal down, i noticed that there is a switch like a kick-down swith in cars with automatic transmission. And ofcourse it doesn't do anything on manual transmission.

Can this be removed easily?

Thanks.

Hi Kert,

I think that your petrol 2010 Auris will have a throttle-by-wire electronic accelerator pedal (since approx. 2006 or earlier, due to emmissions regs.) So any 'leftover' hardware buttons and brackets from previous models (a kickdown button or similar?) will have never got to be fitted when new.  But I have experienced similar before on one or two other, unrelated. cars a long time back.

Is it possible some small stone or grit has got behind the throttle pedal and is slightly fouling it at full travel? Or, perhaps the pre-shaped carpet is 'popping' into a different shape as it's being squashed?

Just an idea, I've never owned your model!  Happy to be proven wrong, of course!

If your car has a speed limiter function, the switch when you press the pedal fully will override the speed limiter.

You can not remove it, it's meant to be there

you have the usual pedal movement, if you push the pedal all the way down it goes into a flood clear mode (when starting the car)

this kills the injectors so it does not flood the cylinders with fuel

there are no extra switches on the throttle pedal, only the clutch and brake have additional switches

regarding automatic kickdown, throttles are fully electronic and have been for the last 20+ years except for some diesels pre 2008

Ok, i will answer to myself.

There was no stones or carpet doing that. It made a wery clear clicking sound.

And, there is no real electrical switch in there.

I opened the small side cover of the pedal assembly and under that was a small piece of plastic with a strong spring in it. This is what makes the clicking sound and forces you to push harder if you want to use full throttle. 😏

I guess it's there for the fuel economy.😏

Now, when it's removed the throttle movement is smooth all the way down.

You don't have to remove the pedal to remove the spring. Actually, it might be easier if you don't, because you have to push the pedal all the way down to compress the spting and then you can get it out with a pick or a small screwdriver.

as I explained above it is used for flood clear the pedal is not designed to use the full range of motion, it's there for a reason

Yes, i noticed your comment and i tested it. But the car will start normally even if the pedal is pressed all the way down. It will not cut off the injectors. Atleast not on my car.

Also, who starts the car with a full throttle?

Anyway, it was really annoying and i removed. But i didn't throw it away, if i possibly need it.
