I've joined this forum to try to get some information from people who know a lot more than I do!

I've recently acquired a 2018 Toyota Aygo with the MMT gearbox. (I can hear what you're saying!)

The car is great and will be ideal for what we need. It drives well and the gearbox works properly when motoring along.

However,

It seems to me that the clutch needs calibrating. The car doesn't just creep forward when its in gear, it positively attacks the car in front in stationary traffic and the engine almost slows to a stall when the brakes are applied.

My first question : Is this normal?

I have the 'Blue Print Info' sheet on 'Initialisation of the MMT ECU' and 'Initialisation of the clutch' and this brings on another couple of questions:

Do you think it would be worthwhile doing this?

What can go wrong?

Thanks in anticipation!

Colin

Thanks for the reply and information, flash22.

I understand your advice and normally I would agree. However I cannot believe that Toyota intended the MMT gearbox to work this badly. We are planning to use the Aygo as a replacement for an old Smart car that has a similar gearbox which has a poor reputation for being snatchy and jerky. The Aygo is a lot worse!

Is there anyone close to Birmingham who could show me their Aygo with an MMT gearbox for comparison?

ah, if that's the case it needs looking at, the later Aygo mmt's are a lot more refined - the clutch needs doing around 60k miles, now thes cars are getting up in the miles/age they start to have issues

So after a lot of thinking, I decided to do the 'clutch adjustment' !  I made up an OBD plug with the correct pins connected, plugged it in and started the procedure.

I must have tried at least a dozen times with different pauses in different places, but I have never heard the 'beeps' I'm supposed to get after I've pressed and released the brakes seven times within three seconds. So I've failed at the first hurdle!

The Aygo is a 2018 version. Is it possible that the procedure doesn't work on this model?

Any information or advice as to what might be going wrong will be gratefully received!

Thanks in anticipation!

Hi Colin,CVTs do not have traditional clutches like those in manual transmissions. Instead of gears CVTs use a system of belts or chains and pulleys to provide an infinite range of gear ratios. Because of this design, there are no clutch plates that need adjusting like in manual transmissions. The operation of a CVT is entirely different from that of a manual transmission, so the maintenance procedures also differ. The procedure you came across might be intended for manual transmissions. Hope this helps.

The MMT in the Aygo isn't a CVT - it is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch.

I will have a look at the service manual for the late mk2 (edit. looks to be Techstream/scan tool only)
