? Faulty USB-C system on New 2024 C-HR

the manual is incorrect the spec is for the usb 2.0 port, the touch 2 limit of 32gb is due to the limitation of the indexing system used in the QNX RTOS this gets even more complex if you have the factory Nav (DCU with MEU)

So is there any reason why a 128GB stick wouldn't work to play music in my MY24 head unit?

I have a few USB A sticks from 62-256GB so have ordered a USB A to USB C adaptor to try those out before I order a 128GB USB-C

This thread specifically discusses the system in the new C-HR. What does the manual for the system in your Corolla suggest? They may well be the same system, but I don't want to make that assumption.

If my understanding is correct, a correctly formatted USB stick (FAT32, USB2.0 HS (480MBPS)) up to 2TB should work just fine.

But note Bob's caveat - "the touch 2 limit of 32GB is due to the limitation of the indexing system used in the QNX RTOS" [rather than anything to do with the USB stick or its format]. The manual for the system in a 2024 C-HR implies that the same limit still applies to the newer infotainment system.

So, if you have more than 32GB of data on the USB stick, the implication is that the head unit won't be able to index it. Whether that means that it would play the first 32GB and just not see the rest, or whether it would fail completely as it attempted to index beyond 32GB I've no idea ...

On another note, 2500 tracks are less than 20 Gb, so do you really NEED that many tracks even 1500 tracks are roughly 120 hours or 5 days worth of continuous playback

32gb of flac files at full bit rate is still 190+ tracks or 15 hours whats down scaled to 192k anyway

as for indexing its just the sheer number of files, you are asking the system to handle you limited by the processor and system ram what is already running the OS

My Corolla says the same as the screenshot from the manual posted above.

I have about 80GB of music of mine and wife and kids. I would rather just be able to copy it all over rather than select what to put on a memory stick based on the audience in the car at the time😁

I'll test it out in the next couple of weeks when I have some time. Failing that we can just BT or AA from the phones but a back up on a stick would be useful.

I know this thread started as a C-HR discussion, but I have the same problem with my 2024 Highlander that I purchased less than 2 wks ago and haven't found a thread on it so want to share.

I've been using a Verbatim 16GB, USB 2.0 formatted in FAT32 in my Rav4 for several years. Worked great. Then using an adapter I used it in the new Highlander, worked fine, but like another person pointed out it sticks out so far you can bump it and damage it (FYI my Ravs media port was in a more recessed area so this was not a problem). So I bought a Verbatim 16GB, USB 3.2, Gen 1, combo USB C & USB A (A so I can get files onto it from the computer, C to plug into the car). It is nice and small so less danger of bumping. However the car refuses to read it and Yes I am using the correct C port, there is only 1 for media, the rest are for charging. Then to add insult to injury I have misplaced my original flash drive so can't even go back to using it with the adapter.

Very frustrated with what should be a simple plug in component. Right now I'm reloading another flash drive like my original one and hoping it will work. I'll report back.

I am having the same problem with my brand new Yaris Premiere Edition. The car doesn’t recognise my iPod or the USB stick. Will be interested to see Toyota’s response.

Well finally, after several days of exchanges with Toyota technical support, I have the answer to this problem, and I am posting it here for the benefit of all future 2024 C-HR owners who wonder why they can’t play music on a USB-C stick in their new C-HR. The answer is not one you would ever expect, and is completely contrary to the advice given in the C-HR Owners Manuals.

Apparently, the multimedia unit in the C-HR requires a USB-C stick that uses the “USB2.0 HS (480Mbps) communication format” and is “USB4 Gen 2 memory stick backwards compatible with USB 3.0/2.0”.  Translated into English this apparently means that the only USB-C stick that is compatible with the new C-HR is an ultra-rare USB4 Gen 2 stick.

On the advice of Toyota tech support, I immediately purchased a 64 Gb Samsung Type C Flash Drive (300 Mbps) (Model MUF 64DA/APC, pic attached) - £12 from Amazon – and it works perfectly despite the fact that it doesn't claim to be a USB4 stick!  Interestingly, despite the fact that it is a 64Gb drive, I was surprised to see that it came ready formatted in FAT32 and not EX-FAT.  I can’t say I even begin to understand any of this, but it works, and I now have my digital music collection back in my car.

Full marks to Toyota tech support for all of this, but black marks to Toyota for not foreseeing the problems this change would cause, and for not providing correct advice in the user manuals.

Just stuck one of these in with 60Gb music and 13000 tracks and works fine. Was a bit sluggish to begin with whilst indexing but all good now. Thanks @Geoffers47

Unlikely to get my car until August so interested in any updates on the type/max size of USB for the new C-HR 🤔
