There are rusted ground straps and nuts on the RHS (non Battery side) in the engine bay. Also look at this rusted circlip on the air intake. The other two circlips beside it are not at all rusted.

Why the heck would I have rusted nuts and a rusted circlip like this?

Very common. They have a very thin plating that doesn't last very long. The good news is that it is mostly cosmetic and they rarely deteriorate to the point they snap. Japanese manufacturers have used this exact design of clips for more than 40 years and they still look the same. So it is easy to get hold of new ones. If you want to make sure it remains easy to undo them, spray with lithium WD40 occasionally or put grease on the threads. I'd recommend spraying ground straps and bolts with lithium grease spray as this will keep the moisture off and prevent corrosion.

Hi Michael,There are a couple of reasons why you might have rusted ground straps, nuts, and a specific circlip in your engine bay engine bays are naturally prone to moisture. Water can splash up from the road, condense from temperature changes, or leak from other components. This moisture can accelerate rust formation on metal parts like ground straps, nuts, and circlips. The rusted parts on the RHS (non Battery side) might be in an area more exposed to water spray or mist from the road while driving. This could explain why other circlips haven't rusted as much.

It's possible there was a slight variation in the material or plating used on the specific rusted parts compared to the others. This could make them more susceptible to rust.If the plating on the nuts, circlip, or ground straps was scratched or damaged during assembly or use, it could expose bare metal underneath, which rusts much faster.

Severely rusted ground straps can hinder their ability to conduct electricity effectively. This could lead to electrical issues in your car, but it's less likely to be the cause of the rust itself.

Try cleaning the affected parts with a wire brush and rust remover. Apply a rust preventative coating afterwards to slow future rust formation. If the rust is extensive or the ground straps are significantly compromised, it is best to change Hope this helps 😃

Thanks for the replies.

This is the code for the clip from partsouq. I might replace it cos it looks bad.

Still waiting for my first C-HR to arrive but my wife has had 3 Aygo’s since 2006 and all have had rusted clips/bolts in the engine compartment as well as rusted brake discs/drums and wheel bolts/locking nuts.

The brake discs get a film over them even after only a couple of days standing  in the rain.

I’ve just put it down to the quality of the metal and the coatings compared to my other cars which have been VAG models.

Totally normal and it is a sign of salty roads usage. All cars will rust the same way, same places, brake discs too.
