2000 Toyota Avensis 1.6 ( 3ZZ-FE)

Hello to all.

Can you guys help me on my issues please

I have this two codes

P0500 - Speed sensor (VSS) - circuit malfunction

Can you tell me where the sensor is located please?

P0420 - Catalytic converter system , bank 1 - efficiency  below treshold

Is this the sensor before or after the Catalytic convertor?

When i brake first couple of times on cold car the brakes feel like when abs engages it vibrates like the abs is engaging then behaves alright....no lights of abs on the dash

My airbag light keeps flashing i have no codes i hjave check the plugs under the seats all is ok

Do you have any tips on try to repair this or any ideas?

Many thanks to all

Hi Tiago, The VSS sensor is typically located on the driver's side of the transmission case in your car. a repair manual can provide specific visuals.. A faulty or dirty VSS sensor can trigger this code. Check the wiring harness near the sensor for any visible damage. If the wiring looks okay you can try carefully cleaning the sensor itself with electrical cleaner. If the code persists after cleaning and inspection, speak to a mechanic for diagnosis and potential replacement.

P0420 Catalytic Converter this code indicates a problem with the catalytic converter system, which involves the exhaust system. Due to the potential complexity of diagnosing and repairing the exhaust system, speak to a mechanic is the best option. They can pinpoint the exact issue, whether it's the converter itself, oxygen sensors like the upstream sensor before the converter for Bank 1 in your car, or exhaust leaks. Brake vibration, warped brake rotors are a common culprit for brake vibration when cold.

While replacing rotors might be a DIY project for some, it's generally recommended to have a mechanic confirm the diagnosis. They can ensure other components aren't causing the vibration and recommend a solution, resurfacing or replacing the rotors.

A flashing airbag light signifies a serious malfunction in the airbag system. I would get this looked at ASAP as it's critical for safety.  This requires immediate attention as soon as possible. Airbag systems are complex and require specialists to ensure your safety. Hope this helps.

Hello.

I cant find the sensor...even with pictures from the net. I dont have the car manual. Can anybody pin point please?!

I dont think the rotors are the problem, because it only happens at 1 or 2 mph at 60 if you apply brakes it will brake smoothly and no vibration....

Many thanks

Hi Tiago,Most cars since the late 1990s have replaced a single VSS with individual wheel speed sensors at each wheel. This provides more precise data for ABS functionality and traction control systems. So you may not have a VSS. Check the wheel sensors as its likely one of these is faulty and the P500 code has flagged up.Hope this helps.
