Thanks again.

We did actually do this after our test drives. We didn't want a bigger spec car.We just wanted a brighter cabin interior and even the Mazda's/ Yaris with the grey interior did not overcome the cramped and uncomfortable seats or lack of headroom.

We also found looking at CarWow that they weren't aware of the almost £1500 pound off special deal that Honda currently has on new hybrids.

But thanks again for your much appreciated feedback

You are welcome.
In your case Hyundai  and kia might offer a good choice of small cars that will suits your needs. Kia stonic is interesting model and Hyundai has similar sized car. Honda jazz hybrid seems ultra popular too. I leave next to Honda dealer and these sells very well. Vw Taigo, or seat and Skoda equivalents are also a good choice. Just avoid anything that has eco boost, wet belts or any similar complicated and unreliable things. I generally recommend Toyota just because they have eliminated all these risky components and their hybrid drivetrain is bullet proof and long lasting.
And I agree that many of theirs new models are too dark and too cramped inside. 👍

Choosing a new car seems to be getting ever more difficult because of the mass of contradictory and misleading information and reviews on the Internet.

I watched a review the other day and the presenter spent most of the time discussing "life enhancing" features of the car eg foot spar, vanity mirror, vibrating seat and ambient lighting. It would have been better to learn whether the car was comfortable, quiet, economical and drove well.

Well I came back to looking to replace my Prius as I simply don’t want to drive a larger car anymore

So I again drove Excel & Design Yaris, both ‘21 plates and then ‘20 (pre facelift) Jazz and a ‘23 facelift Jazz.  I considered a Polo/Fabia but the DSG potential issues put me off

I really wanted to stay with Toyota but found the Yaris too small, too dark inside, too noisy and the ride too firm even in Design spec. In isolation the Yaris is a superb car but after driving it back-to-back with the Jazz I just couldn’t say no to the Jazz

I have gone with the ‘23 facelift model, it’s just over a year old and is the Advance model.  Apparently the brake simulator failure doesn’t affect the facelift models

It comes with heated seats, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, climate control, reverse camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic, keyless entry etc etc. It’s similar spec wise to an Excel

What surprised me the most was that it’s pretty much as quiet as my Prius even at 70 on the motorway, it rides nice and softly, the view out is superb and the space inside is amazing for such a small car.  The interior quality seems almost luxury compared to the Yaris and the doors close with a nice solid sound too

The Yaris, unfortunately, felt cramped and rather claustrophobic

The Jazz was much happier on the motorway than the Yaris and I also think the Jazz was a bit faster to accelerate from a standstill and getting up to speed on motorway slips

I really wanted to go with the Yaris to keep in the Toyota family but I know I’d always be thinking I should have got the Jazz instead 😉

Well done.
Enjoy your new car.
There is nothing wrong to switch brands and actually it is the right thing to do when some brands have nothing to offer to the taste of the customer.
Toyota doesn’t have one model to be direct competitor to Honda jazz currently, the jazz is an mpv car and not a small hatchback by any mean.
It is also the favourite car of elderly people and really a good one. I live next to a Honda dealer and I noticed that. Honda in general and Mazda seems to offer better and plusher interiors than Toyota, although Toyota aren’t too bad imo. Cars like vag and others in their small ones aren’t much different, hard plastics everywhere.
Either way, good to have the car you like. 👍

Don’t know if I’m elderly at 62! oh maybe I am 🤣

Unfortunately the sale fell through, long story

However I’ve just reserved another facelift ‘23 Jazz.  This one comes with a service plan up to 2028 which will save about £1,300’ish over the next 4 years

This one is from a Honda dealer whereas the previous was from an independent

Just hope all goes smoothly and I will get my new car on Friday

The Jazz Hybrid is a pretty good car - It was the other one in my shortlist when I was looking for something to replace my Mk2.

I went with the Yaris because apparently I'm a hooligan and went with driving dynamics over practicality (Also the Yaris can have a HUD and I preferred the digital dash!), but the Jazz has the fantastically flexible rear seats I dearly miss from the Mk1 and Mk2 Yaris and its rear doors aren't as stupid as the Yaris ones.

One technical difference with the Jazz is it's a series hybrid (The Yaris, and almost all the Toyotas, are series/parallel hybrids), which means the electric motor does *all* the motive work - It's much much more powerful than the one in the Yaris as it has to take the car all the way to motorway speeds - The engine is literally just a generator in the Jazz and plays no part in moving the car unless you go fast enough for it to engage a lock-up clutch where the engine drives the wheels directly at a fixed gear ratio.

This means it does drive slightly differently to the Yaris, and feels much more EV-like in terms of very smooth power delivery at all speeds, whereas the Yaris feels slightly different when the engine is doing most of the heavy lifting.

Just make sure the one you get has the brake problem fixed

But please let us know how you get on - I'd be interested to hear your long term experiences with it!

Cyker, Bev, I hope you don't mind me giving my impressions of the Jazz Hybrid, I'll make a few comparisons with the Yaris (not criticisms)

The Jazz engine/ ecvt drivetrain very smooth in all conditions and pretty quick off the mark from standstill, attention been paid to soundproofing the interior and door shuts, doors close with a nice "thud" the Yaris sounds tinny, Jazz has good quality interior material and is very spacious both front and rear, the Yaris feels cramped by comparison, magic seats are just that, "magic", doors open wide. Good sized boot, no provision for a spare wheel, fold the rear seats down for a flat floor you have converted your Jazz into a small van, seats are comfy, no height adjustment on passenger seat??? I find the infotainment system, satnav and climate control very easy to use, lots of safety tech some of which is mildly annoying, auto headlights have a mind of their own, sometimes on in bright sunlight but are excellent at night, it has been said the Jazz is expensive but it does come with a lot of kit and I think worth it as I find it a pleasure to own

My Prius has HUD which I might miss on the Jazz, however my previous Prius didn’t have it and owned that for 9 years so I’m sure I’ll get used to it again

I believe the brake issue on the Jazz was sorted in the facelift cars, so 2023 onwards should be fine

I did find the Yaris to handle slightly better than the Honda but the Jazz is by no means a bad handling car and I did find it accelerated a bit quicker than the Yaris too

As you say Cyker the rear doors on the Jazz open up much wider than the Yaris and the interior & magic seats are so practical

It may even be my last car if it proves to be reliable and hassle free as I intend to keep it for years

If it’s not too icy tomorrow I will be seeing the Jazz, it’s about an hour’s drive away

Have you owned a Yaris and Jazz Bill?

I agree the soundproofing in the Jazz does seem pretty good compared to the Yaris and certainly the doors shut with a nice thud

I found the Jazz generally to feel a bit more upmarket than the Yaris somehow

If you own the Jazz now Bill have you had any issues with it worth mentioning?

Yes Bev I owned a Yaris Cross for six months couldn't get along with it, too many negatives previously posted on this forum, now own a black Mk 4 Advance 2024 MY, no issues so far, it's a keeper

Haven't driven a recent Jazz, but just switched from a 2012 Jazz to a 2022 Yaris. FWIW, the Yaris's turning radius is considerably bigger than the old Jazz's, which is a minor annoyance.
