Hi all , back in the day it was recommended you run a new car in up to 1000 miles but I have been told that’s a thing of the past , so I was hoping for some views and recommendations on what new owners have done , have you run it in , how long and how did you go about it if it was a plugin ? Many thanks

Got mine new in September non plug in dynamic hybrid, dealer told me not to over rev it for first 1000 miles so just took it easy getting up to speed .

Thats what we did .

Was just fairly gentle with the acceleration and braking for the first 600 miles of engine running (i.e. 600 miles on top of EV miles). To be fair I had a few longer journeys in the first week or too so it wasn't long.

It is a thing of the past in the sense that there is little need to 'run in' a modern engine. We no longer need to change the oil after the first 1,000 miles etc.. Added to that, it is rather difficult for the driver to mistreat the engine in our hybrids - the hybrid system chooses the appropriate revs so the driver isn't able to over rev the engine or stress it by running at too low a level of rpm.

I believe that Toyota discourage towing for the first few hundred miles and it makes perfect sense to treat the transmission, brakes and tyres kindly for a little while. And, of course, it's a good idea to break-in the driver while he/she gets used to the complexity of the controls, driver aids and the characteristics of the car.

The more cautious of our PHEVies chose not to charge the traction Battery so that the engine would have to run more often for the first few miles - but that really isn't necessary ... 😉

Running in any mechanical or even electrical and electronic kit is a good idea in principle, in the world of Hifi it's called burn in. Just a matter of keeping the stresses at low levels for the first month or so on average usage. Phillips point about the driver is a good one too.

I was brought up to have ‘mechanical sympathy’ so not running in is simply anathema to me. It took a great deal of steel to not change the oil at 1000 miles….

I ran my 2021 R4P Prime in by fairly eco gentle driving for the first 1000 ICE miles which literally took months as I was mostly working from home and any travel was local and which was usually in EV mode! Now it just gets hammered 😂
