Corolla Touring Sport 2023 Excel, when using Apple CarPlay and I receive a WhatsApp message the left speaker keeps playing radio.  It makes it difficult to hear the message and impossible to speak a reply.  I have never come across this in any other car

I think it’s a feature, when the message is playing use the volume control to increase it.

I have the same thing when listening to music and wanting to use Siri. Only the drivers speaker goes quieter and the music continues on the others. 

most of the time it’s ok, but if you have the volume up a bit you end up shouting at Siri.

Have you got Siri set to Automatically read messages? That is supposed to lower the volume on incoming and outgoing Siri activity…

Try volume up when message is spoken.

Have you tried setting the default “Maps” behaviour. 
this is sometimes used if there is no particular setting per app. 
 

settings / maps / spoken directions

choices are:

voice volume: softer / normal / louder

directions pause spoken audio: on / off

directions wake device: on / off

directions on radio: on / off (this setting will also make siri lower the background audio when reading/composing messages)

Setting speed sensitive volume to medium seems to improve it too.

I had it switched off and now it's set to medium I don't have to speak as loud as the music seems quieter when Siri activates.
