Hi, I know the oil topic is one for great discussion and has been around for a long time. I would just like some advice on my sons car. It is a 2010 Aygo which we bought secondhand last year as his first run around. Not knowing much at the time I bought an official Toyota service kit off eBay which supplied the 5w30 viscosity oil. I have no idea what was used by the previous owners. The car is just coming up to 80000 miles, we have done around 3000 miles since we serviced it 10 months ago and have not needed any oil top ups, it is running rather well. However I see in the handbook it recommends 0w20 oil and to tlreturn to this if other oil is used, so what I am looking for from more competent car mechanics out there, do I just continue with the 5w30 I have had no issues with for the last year, should I be going back to Toyota recommends 0w20 even though I have no history of prior servicing. Any help would be appreciated.

Toyota makes these preferences following extensive testing - far beyond any mechanic's knowledge or experience. As Toyota's preference is 0W-20, stay with that.

In simple term:

For Aygo manufactured on or after 2008, Toyota has switched from 5w30 to 0w20.

The car rans okay on 5w30, but it will ran better with 0w20.

For instance, I found my car (2012 Aygo) consumes less oil with 0w20 than 5w30

Fab, thanks for the replies. The service is due next month,  I will give the 0w20 a try and see how it goes.
