The owner’s manual for my 2012 2.2 diesel RAV4 states that I should let the engine idle for 1 to 2 minutes after a long drive to protect the fuel injectors. 
Are there any other simple “do and don’t “ to help prolong the life of the engine and reduce repair bills ?

Yeah, don't rev it hard when the engine is still cold, and change the oil & filter regularly.
