With a limited budget as in another post I wanted separately to ask opinions on the petrol T25 ( pre 2009 I think ) vs the petrol T27 in terms particularly of reliability and common problems and also manual vs auto

cheers

Hi Peter,T25 vs T27  considering your budget, reliability and common problems.

Common problems and reliability,T25 2003-2008, It is usually reliable and known as a workhorse.Pre-2005 with a 1.8 VVT-i engine has had some reports of piston issues. This was reportedly fixed after 2005 and not many major problems have been reported.T27 2009 onwards this is also known for reliability and it builds on the strengths of the T25.

The newer 1.8 Valvematic engine offers more power and is also reliable. With your budget the T25 might be a more affordable option due to its earlier production years.

Common Problems with both T25 and T27 are reports of minor electrical issues on some of the models.Service history checks on both are important.

The manual vs automatic. With the manual it is usually considered more engaging to drive and potentially slightly more fuel efficient it may be cheaper to buy initially and to maintain. The automatic offers a smoother driving experience, especially in town traffic, however it may be more expensive to purchase and to maintain. Both the T25 and T27 are known for reliability, so it will likely come down to finding a car in good condition within your budget. If you are able find a well maintained T25 post-2005 with the 1.8 VVT-i engine, it could be the better choice. The T27 offers more power and a bit more refinement but may be more expensive to buy obviously depending on your preference for a Manual or Automatic. I'm sure others will also give their opinions on both models.Hope this helps.

I was fortunate to compare my current T27 Avensis 1.8 Tourer TR ('58 plate 2009) with my friends when he owned a T25 1.8 Tourer TR '57 plate. The biggest advantage of the T27 is cruise control and 6 speed manual gearbox. Being the later model, gives slight advantage in condition of the car depending how it has been used and cared for!

I had a t25 1,6 (2004 sedan manual), 14600km when I bought it and 375tkm when sold. Only "big" job was the right front wheel bearing.

Before that there was a T22 1,6 sedan manual (2001), but that's a different story.

Now I drive T27 1,8 valvematic (2009 estate manual) and so far there has been one big job: valvematic controller (355tkm). And many minor issues like starter motor, rattling front calipers, etc

That T25 has been the most reliable Avensis to me.

The valvematic 1,8 engine has more power but in normal driving I feel no difference between 1,6vvti  and 1,8 valvematic. Vmatic consumes less? Low rev torque is poor in Vmatic.

So these are just my opinions and experiences...
