One big missed opportunity with the ethanol blend fuels is they should have made them much higher octane and have car manufacturers design cars around that, instead of targetting 95RON so we don't get any advantage out of it.

Ethanol is an excellent octane booster and could have been used to allow higher compression ratios, and thus power and efficiency, as standard, but instead we have this bizzaro backwards scenario where the lower octane fuel grade has more ethanol and the high octane grade has less!

Going back 40 years or more ago, a pal of mine worked for Shell Research in E.Port, they used to run all sorts of fuels and additives in cars, in fact they would run them to destruction in some cases. When I was rallying, we went to an event in a South American Ford car that ran on alcohol, it was a thing back in the day for South American cars apparently to run on alcohol, but it would kill the carburettors. Shell were tasked with making additives to stop this happening, the car he was using would be filled up at Shell HQ with alcohol and the required additive, then he would have to run it and report back any issues etc. The only trouble was he was limited to where he could go on a tankful of fuel as there was no chance of filling up anywhere. The exhaust fumes smelt like a distillery  🤣🤣

But none of us can actually afford to buy any fuel in Germany - ouch! 😉

On the Tesco's forecourt there is Tesco Momentum 99 - their E5 is a 99 octane blend with appropriate additives - which is what I buy when I feel the car deserves a treat!

When you are there on holiday there isn’t much choice but to buy ones fuel there….!
