Hi

Started to hear this noise recently (check attached audio). Any ideas what it could be?

Asked a few people locally and they all said different things.

It’s a Toyota Avensis 2007 2.0 D4D. 150k on the clock. Full service only 4 weeks ago.

On cold starts metallic knocking noises aren’t a good sign. Was it the same before the oil change ?
Bearings or hydraulic lifters , try to point the noise of its coming from bottom or top end of the engine.

No issue before the oil change. Do you think its related?

Does the noise vanish when engine warm?

As TonyHSD said, try to listen to the engine. You can use a hose (like a stethoscope) to locate where the knocking sound is coming from. Listen to the oil pan and cylinder head.

When the engine warms up - say 10/15 mins driving - noise disappears.

Took it to the garage and guy suspects one of the fuel injectors.  £550 quid to replace just one!  thank you all for your help.

Don’t replace anything until it’s diagnosed properly and proof it is from injector. If any abnormal noises appear after an oil change it is very likely to be from the new oil. What type, viscosity and oil brand have you used before and after ?
You can buy wynns injector cleaner and add to the fuel , drive 40 min at higher speeds 60 mph on motorway. See if anything changes.
If the engine is knocking on cold only but nothing when warms up it could be the oil because when cold the oil is thicker and thicker oils aren’t good. The thinner the oil is the better protection provides especially in cold.
Check owners manual and use exact spec motor oil , I believe it’s 5w30 but you double check.

this is the one they mention on the invoice.  looks like 5w30.

I will take it for a drive tomorrow with what you've suggested. I actually routinely put in wynns diesel injector cleaner every 2 months or so.

And what oil was used before ?
This is C2 type for newer engines with low ash capability to protect dpf and add blue systems. Perhaps you need to go back to what was filled before. Do a wyyns treatment and see if anything changes. Do one step at a time and wait a week or few days between to try to notice any difference possible so you can build better picture.
I personally won’t bite on mechanic suggestion. If he is sure at 100% ok, but if he only suggests I will take my business elsewhere.

I guess here you mean drive 40 mins in a high gear at 60mph?

I agree with Tony - get a second opinion. If it was my car, I would remove (or get someone else to) the sump and check the rod bearings, for peace of mind. It sounds like one has gone south. That said, Diesels are always a bit of a dark art so I could be wrong and it is a problem with an injector. But, if it is a rod bearing then it will only get worse by running the engine. So, it's better to check sooner.

At the same time, you can check if there is abnormal smoke coming from the exhaust... and if there is enough coolant in the expansion tank.

I was just wondering  about a head gasket issue and coolant leaking into the cylinder when engine turned off?

On the other hand, it doesn't take very long for the coolant to disappear from the cylinder when the engine is running. However, the sound is quite similar...

The idea of time and speed is to rise temperature high to burn any soot formation and any clogging along the fuel system and exhaust.
No need to drive very fast, but few brisk acceleration are helpful to shoot out all that dark matter outside of the exhaust.

  • 1 month later...

Hi All,

So after much deliberation, I purchased a replacement injector off eBay and asked a local mechanic to fit it as the original garage wouldn't fit parts unless they bought them.

Part cost £210 off eBay and labour of £100 (I also got the EGR valve cleaned).  So far, so good.

Hope this helps someone else and thank you all for your help.
