2010-2014 1.8l Petrol or 2.0l Diesel?

Hey!

I'm currently in the market for a used Toyota Avensis estate, I'm having my eye set on any 1.8l petrol and 2.0l diesel models in the years between 2010-2014. Any tips on which model year/engine will be more reliable?

I will drive a mix between city driving and longer drives.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Reliability 1.8 petrol wins, efficiency the 2.0 diesel wins.
What is more important to you perhaps will dictate the choice.
Usually diesels aren’t any favourite at the moment as the obvious emissions bs that are going on around the world and if you live in a big city or large town , diesel may not be a good choice just becomes of that reason.
Stay away from 1.6d and 2.0 d after 2015 models which has bmw engines, these aren’t the best on a long run and has all bad thing that comes with any bmw , unnecessarily complicated and expensive to maintain or repair.

If you need to go anywhere near a major city then forget the diesel - It's clear the government are going to use it as a scapegoat for everything despite them being the ones who encouraged everyone to get them in the first place, so they're going to get increasingly penalized as time goes on by cash-strapped local authorities - What savings you'll make in fuel will be offset by the daily fines I mean Charges required to go into such places.

I will depend on how much distance you cover.  If you are driving 25,000km+ per year I would go with the diesel.  As others have said, depending on where you live, diesels may be taxed more heavily.  Where I live, diesels incur the least amount of tax.

And because we are talking about diesels here an interesting story and point of view from a car enthusiast. I do agree with him and my theory and predictions are that same faith will have the bevs in near future and Battery gate is just about  time.

Thanks for the help! Just curious, I hear that alot of people say that the 1.8 petrol is a lot more reliable, does that mean that the 2l diesel isn't reliable? Or is it that the 1.8 is just unkillable? Because I really am tempted to buy the diesel given the availability in my area.

Thanks again in advance for the replies!

Well I had a 2.0 d4d (2012) and it was pretty reliable until the head gasket issue. It was repaired (expensively) by Mr. T. After that it was reliable again, but after 100k km (after the repair) I started to fear the hg problem coming back, so I sold the car. There were no symptoms, but still...

I had already bought a 1.8 valvematic (2009) manual before, just to be safe. It has also been reliable, just a problem with the valvematic controller. I fixed it myself, the part was expensive...

I miss the 2.0 d4d, but I never dare to buy one again. So I keep driving my 1,8 and fearing what might be the next issue!

You should buy what you want, don´t mind me.

I have a diesel and it has never caused me any trouble.  If they are serviced on time and looked after, they are a pretty reliable engine.

I'm sorry to bring in a new engine in the conversation, but how does the 1.6 petrol rank in terms of reliability? Would you say it's more reliable then the 2l diesel?

My Avensis (1adftv) had a full service history (by Mr T) when I bought it and was the second owner. I was aware about hg issues but I thought those problems were only in 2,2 diesel engines. Well, I was wrong: when I took the car to Mr T for the head gasket job, the workshop boss told me there has been several cases in 2,0 engines too...

He also told me that Mr T had given (silently) extended quarantee for 1AD-FTV, 2AD-FTV engines and because the hg job was so labourish, hole new engines had been installed instead. Ofcourse not in my case anymore... The car was too old and too many kms.

Diesel Avensis is cheaper than Valvematic around here. And like other (old) dpf diesels, it's a risky buy because a lot of dpf filters has been removed. And the authorities threaten with big fines if the car get caught in the inspection.

how many miles was on your car bud when the dg went on it .i notice most of the taxi men around where im from are driving the toyota t27 diesel taxies and i still see loads of the older toyota avensis driving around. so im kina confused as if this is such a big problem why is there so many taxi men driving them etc plus i was chatting to a taxi man who had a t27 avensis diesel for a taxi he said never gave any bother and he sold it on to another taxi guy and company and its still driving away

I'm not saying that it's a big problem because most of them work well until the end. I guess I (and some others) have just had bad luck...

On the other hand, there must be something when Mr. T changed his own engines to three-letter products. Which is another story...
