Afternoon, a relative is thinking of buying a petrol Yaris, looking at a 1 litre vvti and a 1.5 vvti. General driving, some long journeys, mainly A roads. Any known issues with either of these or any advice welcome. Many thanks.

My wife has a 1ltr petrol a I drive occasionally and it's a great car and I would prefer it to the Mark3 hybrid, but it cannot compete with the Mark4 Hybrid. So you pays your money and you make your choice. But the 1ltr petrol manual Yaris is a fine car.

manuals are 1.0 or 1.33 up to 2018 when the 1.33 was dropped in favour of the 1.5 to meet emissions

1.0 is a bit underpowered and can be hard work on the motorway, the 1.33 has the extra you need and is less rev-happy at higher speeds

spec wise avoid the base model active and Icon the icon-tech is a decent spec

given your location and the Welsh roads the 1.33 will handle the hills and county lanes

I'd try and get a 1.5 over the 1.33 - The 1.33 is a bit gutless at the low end; It's a very jappy engine in the sense that all the torque and power is at the top of the rev range so you need to rev it as much as the 1.0 if you want any go.

It also has a reputation for burning oil, although a 2016+ unit should be one of the revised ones where they fixed that.

The 1.5 is more similar to the engine in the Mk4 Yaris and can switch between Atkinson/Miller-cycle and normal Otto-cycle so should be more efficient when driven sedately but have more oomph when beans are demanded.

Either would be more favourable than the 1.0 for regular hill traversal though!

That said the 1.0 isn't bad and is a surprisingly capable engine - I regularly get passed by 1.0L Aygos on the motorway

I know!

I get a bit terrified when I get a lift from one.

They must be taking your advice about revving the nuts off Japanese engines.

1.33 oil burn issues were sorted by late 2012 it only affects the very early Mk3's

the later 2017 on manual/cvt cars had the 1.5 2NR-FKE
