Can you select the phev to operate solely as a hybrid

It defaults to EV when you start but yes you can then operate just as a hybrid by pressing the EV/Hybrid button before moving off even if there is charge in the Battery. If the Battery is empty it will also act as a hybrid but may briefly run on EV just like a normal hybrid.

Yes as Mead mentions. Noting that in EV mode the power is limited to c. 230hp (front and rear motor total power). And it feels that Toyota rapidly curtails available power in EV mode beyond 50mph from my anecdotal experiences.

In hybrid mode you get the full 306hp DIN. ICE is mechanically assisting driving the front whilst also acting as a generator for the electric motors which are also running. That's a heavy bias towards FWD. Roughly 5/6 th of the power is at the front. 

My preference would have been for a higher power rear motor to improve traction at take off. 120hp rear motor rather than the 54hp(?). Perhaps we'll see this in the new R4P next year along with a higher capacity Battery?
