Leak in AC pressure pipe - warranty cover?

Hi everyone,

I have a 2013 Yaris, currently in the last year of its extended warranty. I've had issues with the AC for the past year or so, and after taking it to a local specialist they advised that the pressure pipe (or line / hose - is that the same thing?) has a leak and needs replacing. This would cost over £500.

I don't have a Toyota dealer particularly near me, but the £500 is more than what I was expecting, so I'm wondering if its worth taking it to the dealership in case it might be covered under the extended warranty? But I don't want to waste a day taking the car to the dealership if it's unlikely to be covered.

The warranty documents covers certain things around the AC, but doesn't mention pressure pipe or similar. It does list rubber hoses, such as heating hose on the exclusion list. Is the pressure pipe a 'rubber hose'?

AC is usually covered by warranty - It's worth trying for it...

The AC pipes are usually metal

Most likely just a seal that it’s easy fix but you need to get it done correctly, system drained, new seal fitted then system pressure tested and refilled Roth gas and oil. Best to try your luck with warranty repair first and if not lucky them an independent ac specialist might be better and cheaper option.

Good grief, whoever quoted that sort of price? I doubt if even a main dealer would.

If a main dealer won't do it under warranty, I'd recommend an A/C specialist.

Thanks all, I'll give the warranty route a try then. The quote is from an independent garage with good reviews that focuses on AC issues among other things, and the only  'specialist' I could find in the area.

I think to qualify for the 10yr warranty you have to have it serviced at Toyota each year, you haven't mention the servicing history.

There are both rubber and metal. Most commonly, it's the metal lines that cause leaks. It varies from model to model but it's almost always vibrations that kill them. The pipes are made of aluminium and have a tendency to wear through at any fixing point or if something else is rubbing against it. Or they crack from fatigue.

It's worth trying the warranty route. Replacing these lines is expensive as they are often nestled in deep with other things and are a bit of PITA to replace.

AC pipes are NOT covered under extended warranty

*ahem* Oh yes they could!! I got charged over £1000 to replace the two main AC pipes in my Mk2 - I told them I was sure they weren't the problem but they insisted their diagnostics was correct. When this, predictably, didn't fix the problem, and in fact somehow made it worse, they then had another look and said it was the condenser and AC compressor. When I asked why they didn't spot that earlier they couldn't give a good answer.

This is why I don't trust their diagnostics at all any more, but after giving them a good bollocking, at least they refunded me the £1000 as extra discount on the Mk4 and gave me full scrappage value on the Mk2
