Wondered if anyone else has experienced the same problem as me? I picked up my new Yaris Cross on 1st March but there was only one key supplied. I was told by the dealer that there was a shortage of keys and that as soon as the other key arrived they would inform me. It's been over 3 months and no sign of the second key despite chasing the dealers up and they can't give me a date when I can expect the other key.

Yes, some members have only been provided with one key, with the second to follow at some point.

Just keep calling them every month until you get a key, or if they are located near you visit every week and have a coffee and biscuit, push them until you have your second key. Spare key is so important and should not be delayed for so long. Also one key cars has lower value as used.

Gosh, I am so lucky that I had a second one.
Although when I picked up the car I thought I only had one! Until I drove away and got home. I wondered why that !Removed! key was keep hitting my knee! The spare key was hanging off my main one😂

But yes, as others said, keep pestering them! Might worth a try to email toyota uk as well, so they can nudge them too

There is a worldwide shortage of key chips. Some models (BZ4X) are only just coming through from last year. When available you will get a letter from Toyota

We cannot order them until we are advised, they are being supplied in phases, when your phase is ready, you will be advised, we couldn't order one even if we wanted to

Do Toyota provide assistance like Lexus if an owner with a new vehicle only originally supplied with one key happens to lose it?

I have not come across that happening yet but I do believe there is a procedure in place

wow did not even know this was a thing. I got two keys for my yaris and wife got two keys for her cross. Both came this year and the Yaris came in April and the Cross was Jan. Not sure I would have believed the dealer if they told me there was a key shortage and I would have certainly got it in writing if they tried to only give me a single key.

Bang on I would do the same and ask for a signed type up on headed paper. Can you imagine trying to get a free  key out of them once staff have moved on, and your basically hoping for good faith.. fingers crossed it will be ok, but unfortunately it’s not always the case.

my wife had a rare purple BMW, bought on the exit of Covid, there was a small scratch on the door that the dealer promised to fix, but due to a paint shortage in that colour  they promised to sort it when it was available again, after 6m still no paint, then when I went in after 10m and there was no record of this ‘promise’ and the original staff I dealt with had moved on. Moral of the story is to always get any commitments or missing bits / promises in writing.

My response under those circumstances would be to walk away and tell them to contact me when it's put right. Done it a couple of times and never heard a thing!

Asked them.... "we're checking ...some been coming through with 1, some with 2" apparently...so sounds like its still an ongoing issue for some ....will leave mine with them until they confirm they have 2...

Generally, if you're getting one with a keyless system you get 2 keys no matter what.

The people only getting one full key tend to be the models that use a key-start, but they're supposed to get a 2nd key later.

wow that almost seems counterintuitive as what would be the excuse there. I would have thought that they have less electronics in compared to the keyless entry ones so could not say it was a chip shortage. I dont think they would have run out of metal for a key cut.

I get the standard keys would have some sort of RFID chip in to say to car its the correct key for starting but dont the keyless ones have all sorts of extra things like radio transmitters and receivers etc.

As the models with key start also have remote central locking, these would also have transmitters and receivers - so not just a key with RFID chip.

Just to clarify, when I say the key'd cars only get one key, I mean 1 full key - They should also get a 2nd 'dumb' key which only starts the car but doesn't have remote central locking function. (And also sets the alarm off if you lock the car with the remote then unlock the car with the key...)

Either way, you have to have 2 keys as if you lost both keys it becomes very expensive because officially you can't code new keys without at least 1 master key present, and you'd be up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

With the 'key' systems, because compatible 'dumb' keys exist, they can be programmed as masters, so even if you lost your real proper remote locking flip key, they could use the dumb key to make a new one.

There is no such alternative with the smart-entry keyless system cars, so they have to give you 2 'full keys' so that you have a usable spare in case one goes missing.

This is also a good PSA - If you loose one key, DO NOT just carry on using the spare - Get a new one made ASAP! It's expensive and you might feel you want to put it off because of the cost, but that cost is nothing compared to the cost you'll be hit with if you loose the spare one as well!!!!

Were they both the same kind of key...? If so, is a good sign they've sorted out their chip shortage issues. TBH I figured they'd have sorted this out ages ago...!

That a security feature - linking the alarm system to the door key barrel is a weakness - the door barrel can be easily beaten with the correct tools easily available on line.

You can link the electric windows opening / closing to the door key barrel but that is set to off by default & requires activating via the OBD port.
