Took the new car up to Durham this weekend to pickup the boy from uni. Handles lovely but my surprise was that the car's SatNav is really good. Didn't really miss Google maps, in fact the SatNav is very google-like. Used the voice prompt to say where I wanted to go and had no problems. First had to go to kingsX St Pancras. Told it St Pancras and it did not disappoint.

Is there yet a sting in the tail that I'm not aware of?

Nope. Adequate for day to day use on your Corolla. I used internal satnav extensively on my toyota cars for 17 years and covered 500k miles until i was lured by the darkside (Carplay) in 2022…

just watch out for the interesting routes when you select “shortest” and it takes you down a farm track…

That's my own fault for not updating my profile when I collected new car on Saturday. Now a 2024 RAV4. SatNav is night  and day between my Rav4 and what I had on my corolla. Never used the Corolla's SatNav, found it rather hopeless compared to Google maps on AA.

Not to hijack your thread but... When using the non Toyota satnav (Android Auto) does anyone know how to turn down the volume of the alerts from the Toyota SatNav? For example out of nowhere "ATTENTION ROADWORKS IN 1 MILE!!!" wakes the little one up no matter how low I have the volume on the music the robo-voice lady is very loud...she's the Toyota voice not the Android Auto voice

I’ve never managed to do it via the in built head unit. I’ve resorted to adjusting the volume in the WAZE/AA app on my phone and this seems to do the trick. This should be a pretty basic function really. Unless someone can enlighten me on how to do this within the car.

From memory so some titles might be slightly different but Home -> Setup -> Voice -> Voice Volume

I’ll give that a try Nigel.

Thanks Nigel, I'll also give it a go

Ah, well, yes ... it rather depends on whether you have a shiny new Toyota Smart Connect system or an ancient gas-power Toyota Touch system.

The obsolete system behaves as Nigel describes - "When an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connection is established, voice command system (Siri/Google Assistant) and map application voice guidance volume can be changed by selecting “Voice Volume” on the voice settings screen. It cannot be changed by “POWER VOLUME” knob on audio control panel."

With the newer Toyota Smart Connect system the OP would have way more voice volume options - in this case you'd want "Navigation Volume" - and the volume "can also be changed using the audio system volume adjustment."

I know my expectation for in car SatNavs is really low from regular iterations of let downs but the shiny one, as you call it, has really wow'd me

What I want to know is when the initial free subscription runs out on the new cloud based nav is how much is it going to be? Otherwise I'll just stick to AA.

With a 2021 RAV4, as per your profile, you'd have the Toyota Touch system rather than the newer 'cloud based' Toyota Smart Connect system. I believe that the car would have come with a three year Map Care subscription (mine did) so yours should run out some time in 2024.

You can look up your specific position via your account on My Toyota and the eStore. Updates typically cost around £120 but occasionally one can get a three Map Care subscription for the same price.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I'm thinking of the system in my new Yaris Cross Premiere that I have on order. The system sounds really good, including optimising how the hybrid system works if you have the destination set. I wouldn't be willing to pay a significant fee for this feature though.

Ive just got a 21 reg Yaris hybrid and I can't turn the volume up on the maps through android auto

When the navigation prompt voice starts speaking turning the volume knob on the head unit doesn't do anything and using the steering wheel controls it puts Spotify back on and turns that volume up

Where is voice volume that you have mentioned or how do I get the volume up on my maps?

I don't have a Yaris, but I'm pretty sure that you would control the volume when using Android Auto via your smartphone ...

Tried adjusting the volume button on your phone? Not inside an app but the physical volume control button on the phone?

Yeah I've tried that aswell.

Asked the assistant to turn her volume up coz she is quiet as well and she says she's at the max 😜
