Today I had a misfortune of hitting a pothole which resulted in a burst tyre. Luckily I was close to home so managed to drive really slowly back home.

I did consider using the foam temp thing supplied by Toyota, but I was told when it dries it is a pain when coming to refit new tyre. Most fitters hate this.

Hence I am considering getting a spare wheel as there is a space for it in the boot (touring sport). However I am not sure about the mounting bits to secure the wheel. Has anyone got a spare wheel fitted in their touring sports? Appreciate any advice.

I also got my space saver kit from Toyota parts in Swindon. Comes with the spare wheel, bolt to secure it, foam insert which holds the jack and brace (which it also includes) and the boot carpet. I didn't bother fitting the boot carpet and just made a hole with a screwdriver for the bolt to go through. The thread is already there and you can feel where to make the hole easily. There is also a space in the foam insert to keep the locking wheel nut.

I do around 17k a year and with the state of the roads in the UK it is just peace of mind having the spare. I can change a wheel in 15 minutes, compared to waiting hours for recovery.

Thanks all for the replies 🙂 I shall consider getting the kit from Toyota Swindon.

In my opinion the car should come with a space saver spare wheel, but it is what it is.

So I have found genuine Toyota spare wheel kits on eBay that is much cheaper. Seems to come with everything except for the mat.

Anyone have experience with these?

I store my spare wheel inside the wheel well without any strapping and it does not move at all while driving. I have other items inside and around it, but I never considered I needed the retaining bolt for the spare wheel. (I have a full sized tyre as a spare).

The strapping (in some vehicles) or retaining bolt are mostly intended to hold the spare in place if the car gets inverted in an accident.

Yes but I am not sure if posting eBay links are allowed?

Yes, the retaining bolt is important bit for safety reasons.
They cost £10 from Toyota dealer and you can drill a small hole through the carpet and screws in. Easy and safe. 👍

This is my full size (16") spare in my 2024 Icon TS.   It's a perfect fit in the wheel well without any foam, etc..   It didn't move around even when unsecured but I have installed the securing bolt for safety reasons (as above).

The stuff wrapped in rags wedged around the edge of the tyre includes the jack, handle, wheel brace, etc..   Snug fit and the boot floor still fits in the lower position.

In a front end shunt you'd be amazed at the lift forces at the rear of the car.

So the cheaper eBay kit is sold out and I’ve also noticed it’s for 17” wheel which is not the correct size. There are other options on eBay around £190 ish. Might consider ordering from official Toyota spares site.

Question, are the highlighted parts below brackets for securing the wheel? Not too sure how the hook works? Do I first need to remove the boot carpet?

The part circled in red is the securing bolt.   There will be a blind threaded hole in the boot floor to take it.   It is probably covered by the carpet but you can feel where it is;   you just need to cut a small hole in the carpet to get to it (no need to remove the carpet).

The hook is the jack handle.   Going to be a slow process using it.   I preferred to buy wheel and tools separately (scissor jack with a ratchet handle and wheel brace with extending handle).

For a space saver, it doesn't actually matter if the spare wheel is the same size as the road wheels, as long as the overall diameter of wheel and tyre together are the same or very close (e.g. on my Audi I had 17" road wheels and a 19" space saver spare).   Obviously, the centre bore, stud fixings and offset have to compatible, but they should be if the wheel is being sold for the correct make and model, irrespective of trim level.

Just be aware that Toyota Direct parts is a dealer - Fish Brothers.

The official Toyota spares site is ToyotaOfficialStore | eBay Stores

I bought a genuine used toyota space saver wheel kit that hadn’t been used with the foam insert off eBay last December for about £160.  I was quoted around £290 for the new kit from Toyota parts dept.  Personally I think the non OEM kits are fine from eBay and Amazon to get you out of trouble but you will need to wrap something around the jack and handle to stop it rattling about in the boot that’s all.
