Toyota Avensis added cruise controller doesnt work

I bought a cruise control stick from a scrapyard; it had been in another Toyota Avensis. The steering wheel didn’t have a stick previously, so I attached it using connectors that fit directly in place of the previous wire. I had to drill a hole in the steering wheel’s plastic to accommodate the stick.

However, now when I press the cruise control button, the light doesn’t come on in the dashboard, and the cruise control doesn’t work. There’s a spot for the light on the dashboard in the left corner, where the word “Cruise” could illuminate. Does anyone know if there’s a separate fuse for this, or is the intelligence needed for cruise control missing entirely? Or do I need to connect additional wires somewhere?

If this intelligent module is entirely missing, where could I check its location in this type of car to verify whether this feature is absent?

Since the car has electronic throttle control, there are no cables going from the accelerator pedal anywhere.

Did you check yours actually supported cruise control....?

You could get a stalk for the Mk2 Yaris too, but it only worked on USA-spec cars with the 1.5L VVTi engine, not any of the euro-spec ones...!

I don’t know, and I haven’t thought about it. However, I have seen two cars with the same engine (1ZZ-FE) where cruise control is installed in a 2005 model.

I found this information:

"If I uderstand right info from Avensis service manual cruise control not work in model with engine type 1ZZ-FE, 3ZZ-FE and 1AZ-FE.

But work with engine 1AZ-FSE and 1CD-FTV for all model.

From 2003.7 model also with engine type 1CD-FTV with D-CAT.

It's not possible to mount cruise control without external control box in model 2004.2 and new with 1ZZ-FE and 3ZZ-FE engines. This engines are controlled by wire but don't have implemented software part for cruise in ECU."

also:

"I assume you bought a third party CC kit which is designed for any car without cruise control capability. What I am trying to say, cars that were never designed for cruise control can use this kit! You will find that 1ZZ 1.8 owners cannot simply upgrade to CC, using the Toyota plug and play retrofit. The aftermarket version is available but expensive - http://www.conrad-anderson.co.uk/products/view/cc177215103/wizard:cruise-control The cost is not worth it at nearly £400!

Mk2 1.8 1ZZ petrol owners will have to source a third party kit, which cost more than the diesel retrofit. That third party kit includes the control unit which is expensive, unlike a cable, switch and fittings for the diesel version. That control unit has to be made to work properly and safely, and that research costs!

I have a Mk3 1.8 petrol 2ZR engine, which comes with CC as standard on TR spec and above, but not on the T2. There is a good chance that because the two other specs with the 2ZR engine has CC, the T2 may have the retrofit. With that in mind, when buying a secondhand Mk3, it is easier to buy a TR than go through the upgrade of the T2.

Basically the CC retrofit (not compatible with 1.8 1ZZ petrol) is for diesels with CC variants in the model line up. That is what this post is about.

What kit did you buy and did it come with instructions? I would go back to where you bought this kit and seek advice!"

That suggests yours doesn't support cruise control which would explain why it doesn't work!

The module your quote talks about is a third party cruise control system which would need to be  installed and calibrated by someone  more qualified as it basically splices into the car's control systems where they were not designed for such a thing, and may cause electrical problems in the future.

I have it and never use it, all those games only damage other things, i would just leave it as demo switch 🙂

As far as I know, there was never any official cruise control support for the 1ZZ 1.8 Avensis, let alone the older 7A-FE leanburn version. The 2ZR Valvematic was the first official 1.8 Avensis to have cruise control. like my 2009 TR Tourer. There were aftermarket third party kits for older cars. Some of the diesels only needed the stalk.
When buying a car, it is best to look for the spec and equipment level. Yes some cars you can add features, but sometimes it's not worth it. My car didn't have full bluetooth for full multimedia playback nor USB. It had bluetooth just for handsfree phone calls and AUX socket. Fortunately I could add an adapter via the CD changer port and have full integration.

Strange thing with cruise control is some drivers never use it for various reasons!
