Hi all,

We recently bought a 2009 Toyota verso 1.8 valvematic CVT. Car has done 93k miles and has good service record. When engine is warm it sounds slightly tappety. I've given engine a flush and fresh oil but sound remains. I was looking around for anything obvious and noticed crankshaft pulley has fair bit of wobble. I wonder what kid of setup it is and how expensive it might be to replace it?

Anyone else had issues with crankshaft pulley on this engine?

Any help appreciated.

I would rather fix this before something goes wrong.

Any chance a link can be posted in Avensis forum as there's lots more of them on the road with same set-up then Verso?

I owned a 2009 Auris 1.6 Valvematic for several years and from memory these engines always did sound a little tappety when hot. The auxiliary belt used to chatter slightly too, which I think was due to slight wobble in one of the pulleys, but it never got any worse so I just ignored it. I sold the car 4 years ago and according to online checks its still taxed and passing MOTs, so nothing catastrophic appears to have happened to it in the meantime!

The only issue these engines ever seem to suffer from is failure of the Valvematic controller unit, but that wouldn't cause any noises as such, just sudden loss of power and an engine management light. Otherwise they are pretty bullet proof.

IIRC it's a harmonic pulley, rubber between the inner and outer, tbh its sounds more like a worn A/C pulley to me

I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. It'll have to be investigated properly if it gets worse I guess.
