Now here is a weird one on my 2024 RAV4.

Got a RSA malfunction warning error message.  Booked in at dealer and they could not find anything obvious.  They cleared the warnings and asked me to monitor, though suggested it could have been the AA dongle I had plugged in.

Anyway, I have since been able to recreate the error message repeatedly.

When I drive down a particular road, within part of that road I get the RSA Malfunction message.  The software in the RAV4 not error handling properly?? My previous 2021 Corolla never had any issues on that stretch and never gave that error message.

Here is that stretch of road - https://maps.app.goo.gl/9kPQZYHQgpiZG2Bi8

Nothing I can see that is dissimilar to other roads.

Have it booked in again on Wednesday and will give the full info on this for the mechanics.

There will be absolutely zero they can do at the dealership. This is a machine learning, computer vision model, such as a region based convolutional neural network. There will be like 3 people in the whole of Toyota that know enough about it to debug it. They may even have outsourced the development.

Suspect the model is misclassifying a sign and or mixing that up with correctly classifying others. Contradictory results.

The output is then passed through an arbitration algorithm which determines whether to accept the sign classification results and combine them into a singular answer for display and onward use (like the over speed limit warnings). Feels like they're missing something outside of the R-CNN on the arbitrator and error trapping front.

This could be caused by anything. A stop sign misclassified as as a minus sign as though it is a speed? The error trapping should pick up on values which are out of expected bounds or there are multiple signs with contradictory speeds. Clearly it ain't been designed well.

Does it carry on working after the failure or do you have to switch the car off and on again?

Is it a new road? As I think some systems will utilise GPS location and road type to generate a speed limit in the absence of good computer vision based sign reading results.

The street view images were captured in 2022 - so may not reflect the way the road looks today.

Dash cam footage might help ... ???

Thanks. I get the gist of what you said, even if the specifics flew right over my head 🙂

The street view shows the same as what is still there now. Not a new street. No new signs.

As you say the error handling is not handling.

The sign recognition continues to work after clearing the message and without restarting car.

You are also correct that dealership can do nothing about it. They checked it and no errors being shown when they plug car into the tech machines, so nothing for them to fix.

One of those annoying things we just have to live with in that case.

Dear SpenToy,

Last friday received my new car GR-Sport PHEV model with the same problem from the Netherlands. My Toyota dealer start procedure re-calibration on RSA camera and 2 days later happens again with same faulty error and now my dealer ship created support ticket to Toyota importer (Louwman) still awaiting for feedback.

Ours it not showing any faults, however it is very inaccurate a bit like the speed recognition, we just ignore it.

At the request of the Toyota importer need start diagnosis on headunit they found unknown  faulty codes from RSA malfunction.

Toyota will analyze logfiles from headunit and to be continued.

Sounds like a big widespread issue.

FIO I’m getting same issue - clears without me doing anything so for the moment I’m ignoring it.  2 week old RAV4 PHEV GR Sport.

Seeming like a common issue. Big on the ML model or something in the classification chain. Dodgy software. They haven't trapped the errors properly.

One would hope an update is coming.

Please report it to your local Toyota dealer, they will start collect log-files with USB-memory and send to Toyota Europe (Belgium). They collected 2 times with same error code and still investigation ongoing and probably is only involved for GR-Sport models...

I think Nick is right! Couple of weeks after taking the car delivery I had this error twice then it cleared itself. Notified the dealer about this for the record. It's stopped ever since.

Should have read "bug in the ML model" But another case of AI having other ideas in my Skype predictive text keyboard FFS. 😂

It simply doesn't work as it should. I suppose it is some inconsistency between the camera and the map.

Unfortunately, it is close to useless and annoying because you cannot switch off the beeping sounds. And Toyota representatives don't know how to deal with it.

I was at first horrified but...

The volume of the beeps is fixed and quite low. Against my normal radio and music volume I can barely hear them so I actually leave it on now. Surprised myself.

You can switch it off before or during your drive. I have one of the 3 driver display screens with settings in the centre. Hold ok, up, up, up, press ok. Done.

However, I did have a malfunction which took up most the Infotainment screen the other week. Failed from all the conflicting signs around the hospital roads.

We rented a car in Nashville n driving to Pensacola probably 200 miles in the auto Collison detection n headlights malfunction and RSA. Car drives find going to notify rental company as soon as we get to Pensacola.

exactly, the sound is so low, I still don't get why so many complain about it being so noisy?🙄🤨

Yeh unless you're driving in silence in EV mode at low speed and then it's loud. But normal driving with the stereo on and I can only just hear it. Just leave it on now. Was expecting it to be a nightmare but it's easy to switch off at any stage and tóo quiet to be annoying. For me and thee anyways.
