Hi all,

I just swapped the MK2 seats into my MK1 aygo today.

My MK1 didn't originally have an airbag in the seats, but when i removed the old ones there was a green connector that wasn't plugged into anything. I assume this is for the airbag.

The MK2 seats of course have airbags in them and I've plugged the wire into them from my car.

My question is - will the seat airbags now work? Or do I have to do something else to wire them in properly so that my car knows that they are there. Because I assume it will be programmed in to not expect these airbags so that the airbag warning light does not show up.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks in advance.

I've done similar before on a couple of Peugeot 206's

It required a different airbag ecu, a pair of satellite sensors ( one each side ) & the body computer reconfiguring but apart from that as the wiring loom was already there from the factory it was basically plug & play.

I'm surprised the airbag warning light isn't ON now the seat airbags have been plugged in to the loom.

It would suspect you will need to at least reconfigure the airbag ecu or possibly replace it for one that has side airbag capability.

You really need to compare the wiring & parts diagrams to see what parts of the system are different between an Aygo with front airbags & an Aygo with front & side airbags.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I imagined it would be more difficult than just plugging them in haha.

But yes I can confirm that the airbag warning light is not on.

I am happy to do some research but I am struggling to find information like this such as parts and wiring diagrams online. Not sure where to start really.

I have looked on parts-catalogs(.com) and seen that I need the airbag ecu with reference number 6546 F7 which is for a 3 door with side airbags, but this doesn't match with the part numbers on the ecu's.

Can anyone who has a MK1 aygo with side airbags point me in the right direction? What ECU model number I will need and whether I need additional sensors?

Or is this even worth it o_0

Thanks in advance.

Okay so I did some more research and found the part numbers on the website. Turns out I was looking at the Citroen diagrams which had a lot less detail than the Toyota ones.

So for anyone who's interested these are the Airbag ECU part numbers (*i think*):

Lowest spec airbags (steering wheel + passenger) 3dr/5dr: 89170-0H010

+ side AND curtain airbags: 89170-0H020 (3dr) 89170-0H030 (5dr)

+ side only: 89170-0H040 (3dr) 89170-0H050 (5dr)

Looks like I will need 2 of these side impact sensors too:

89831-0H010 (3dr)      89831-02020 (5dr)

From the diagram it looks like these sensors are in the doors so I will pull off my door cards next and hope the connector is there.

I hope all of this will just be a case of plug and play. Does anyone know if some other computer in the car will need reprogramming? Because if that's the case then I don't have the equipment for that.

Thanks in advance.

They look like satellite sensors.

Peel back the carpet along the door openings & look for a small threaded stud or threaded hole doing nothing plus a tapped up connector plug.

Hi,

Thank you @forkingabout for trying to help me despite not even owning one of these cars 🤣.

I finally got round to doing it today. I couldn't find them under the carpet but was surprised to find them already installed when I pulled the door card off.

So, for reference, if anyone is ever looking for these sensors they are in the doors.

So it looks like I have everything for the system to work. I checked what Airbag ECU model I had and it was 89170-0H010 as expected, so I will be ordering a 89170-0H040 model today.

Crossing my fingers I'll just be able to plug in the new airbag ECU and get no errors/warning lights 🤞

If I have to reprogram some computer brain in the car I will struggle.

I will post updates here.

Thanks in advance.

Ok so I changed the ECU today.

I'm happy to report that it seems to have done the job! No tricky reprogramming or anything.

So I essentially only needed the seats which I already had because the comfort is so much better with the MK2 seats and to changed the ECU which wasn't a hard job either. All the more reason to upgrade to the MK2 seats if you have one of these Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 cars. I think this is definitely a must do job since all the sensors for it and cabling was already there.

You can check if you can do this by looking for a bright green connector AND cable attached to it under your existing seats.

It seems to be working as I changed the ECU and I didn't have any airbag warning lights. To make sure it was working I unplugged the seat airbag and I then did have a flashing airbag warning light. So the system must be now checking for the seat airbags which is great news.

I guess we won't know if it fully works until I crash 😅.

For those who are wondering, the Airbag ECU is located under the centre console. All you need to do is remove the one bolt in the compartment below the gear stick and pull out the trim surrounding it. This will then expose the ECU which has 3 bolts holding it down.

What's interesting is that now I've done this it could be completely feasible to do the same method to retro fit curtain airbags too. But since I can only seem to find them for the MK2 cars I'm not sure if these would fit on the MK1. But I'll gladly take the small extra safety I've got from just doing this.
