Hi,

Just got a 2021 RAV 4 Design AWD and am planning on taking the car to France later in the year hence the need for a speedo in Kph. I fiddled with the onboard options and found how easy it was hence this topic, so if you have this already on the site I do apologise as I couldn't find it.

On display in front of steering wheel go to Settings and press (ok).

Select units (ok)

Select Km/L (ok)

Speedo will then change to Kph as easy as that.

Hope this is useful.

You don't really need to change anything. My 2021 RAV4 shows MPH (analogue) around the outside and KPH (digital) inset. For a temporary trip that would be perfectly useable.
YMMV.

Hi Mark,

With my eyesight I'd rather have a full display, The kph on the speedo that has main mph is a bit small for me without looking carefully. As its so easy to change I will go with big kph on speedo.

Agree totall.,more time with eyes on the road if you have  the big digits up on screen.

At least you have kph shown. For us with "European" versions you only get kph with no possibility of switching to mph. We're clearly not supposed to drive to the UK - which I do occasionally.

That is a very silly, perhaps EU, thing. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to drive with the speedo showing the 'wrong' units:

  • 30 mph = 50 kph
  • 60 mph = 100 kph
  • 70 mph = 110 kph
  • 80 mph = 130 kph - for Continental use only

- all close enough for the purposes of adherence anyway.

That's what I do / use for short trips to the continent - if I'm there for more than a few days I'll switch the display.

And it's all pretty bizarre - long, long ago, it the days of the Zara Picasso (a great car even if it was a bit French) we could switch its display to kph etc. when we took it onto the continent. (I don't know whether it worked the other way around for cars built for the French market.)

And don't forget to switch off the radar speed trap detector on your satnav or whichever satnav apps you use.  Big fines if you are caught with it switched on.  I assume you would need to be stopped for this to be actually checked (check point/accident etc).  When I was stationed in Germany many years ago the politzei took great delight stopping Brit cars at roadside check points so better to be safe than sorry.

On the subject of ‘safety camera’ displays, despite turning ‘show safety camera’ off and disabling  ‘Use online data for safety cameras’, the satnav still ‘pings’ when approaching a camera. Is there something else needed to completely disable the alerts?

Look at the POI setting?

Paul, the two settings I mentioned are in the POI area. I can’t find anywhere else that’s relevant.

It’s not a big issue but should be achievable.

Reference safety cameras in France. Last time I was over in France about 18 months ago the cameras came up as accident black spots and another phrase that I can't remember now. This phraseology is a way around the camera warning thing as far as I was aware. I had been travelling in France for about 18 years ( 4/5 times a year) until a few years back and remember laws changing quite early on.If my memory serves me correctly last time I went over I didn't change anything on the car and it altered itself accordingly.

As far as mobile camera ( radar detectors) is concerned then that is totally different. You will get done for having one of those in the car.

Basically the car is designed around different countries so I don't think there is to much to worry about.
