Have just purchased a 2018 Yaris VVT Icon 1.5  petrol model . My engine has a timing belt and not a timing chain is this normal for this model ?

Not sure who's told you that it is a belt but it is not. It is a chain. Has been since the 2007 models came out...

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering not being mechanically minded what the belt was by the alternator?

That's a serpentine belt, not timing belt.

aka the Aux belt - It drives all the ancillaries like water pump, alternator, aircon pump etc.

A good way to tell is timing belts have teeth, but aux belts are smooth, often with parallel grooves to prevent it sliding off the pulleys.

It has been chain driven since the mk1, 1999 onwards.

I thought that too but I wasn't 100% sure... 2007 -> definitely.
