Hi folks!

I have recently purchased a brand new Corolla 2.0 Hybrid 2023. I have drove it for approximately 10k km already. A few days ago after a longer trip (120km on a highway) I faced an issue. I tried to slow my car down but it didn’t stop. I pressed the brake pedal half way down without any pressure and then the car immediately stopped (with the force similar to the pedal position) making and alarm noise since it detected another car coming in front of me. It was insane and scared me a lot.

Have you ever heard about similar issues? Thanks 🙏🏾

Never heard of this. It sounds like the system stopped responding to pedal inputs and only operated when the emergency brake assist was activated.

Did the brakes then start working properly again so that you could get home?

Regardless of your answer to that question the advice has to be - do not drive the car again until the dealership has had a look at the brakes.

Get the brake system checked out - Could be the pedal position sensor glitched out or there might be some air in the brake lines or something...

One of the things I dislike about the brake-by-wire system in the hybrids is you get none of the feedback you'd get from a normal hydraulic brake; It's all simulated

Hm, this sounds more like something with cruise control or other aid systems misunderstood or something.
Toyota brake systems are very good and safe .
The only issue that happens is when slowing down quickly and you run over cracks or bumps and one or more tyres lose contact, then the abs deactivates the brake by wire and you are left only on hydraulic brake power without electric  booster , but that is only for ultra short period of time , although it makes you feel you have lost your brakes.

This is something that happens to me fairly regularly due to the very poor roads here, both in my old Auris and now in my Corolla.

When it switches from regen braking to friction braking it does feel like the brakes have had some sort of failure but after a while you can recognise it and press the pedal a bit harder when it happens without thinking.

The best drivers response in these situations is to fully lift foot off the brake and press again. This will reactivate the normal braking operation.
It’s not naturally, and perhaps can feel scary to many people but if anyone try that will see it works best. 👍

I think the trick is to judge the rate of deceleration and realise early when the  light regen braking isn't going to cut it, then apply that little bit of extra pressure it takes to introduce the wheel braking. I'm sure most of us are playing the same game; trying to avoid friction braking and maximise the benefits of the hybrid system, but it's easy to set a trap for yourself that way, especially when coming to a stop from high speed such as a motorway exit.

what do you mean short period of time? electic breaks are out for a few seconds at least. this is the most annoying thing about my car because i have bumpy driveway. ive never had car with ****tier switchover from electric to real beaks

Yeah, I have realised that. I was wondering if there are more cases like that since I am quite new to this forum. Nevertheless, I am going to take my car to the dealership tomorrow to check that out. I will post the outcome of such investigation. Thanks guys! 🙏🏾
