Anti Yaw Control

It's a system which intelligently manages the brakes mid corner to stop you spinning, understeering or oversteering. It monitors each wheel speed, as well as the forces on your car, and it'll brake a single wheel to keep your nose pointing where you want it. Ridiculously expensive and complicated! Useful on big fast cars that are a little bit lardy....

Well it's pretty cheap these days. The Corolla and I believe Celica T Sport cars both have a version of this.

Not only does it affect the brakes, but it can also cut the flow of fuel into the cylinders in an instant.

There are sensors on each wheel for speed, a sensor on the steering column to gauge the amount of

lock and a yaw sensor which measures how quickly the car is rotating about a vertical axis.

If the car is understeering, the vsc system will reduce the throttle and apply the rear brakes to give more

front-end grip. If the car is oversteering, the outside front wheel gets more braking force.

I think there are two benefits to having it fitted---obviously it helps keep the car on the line in all weather

conditions, but also importantly because of all the sensors it can tell you when the car is on the limit.

The Corolla has a light which flashes when the degree of cornering is enough to get the computer to

help out a bit, and when the limit of grip is reached a beeper sounds.

Really you can feel when you are getting a bit of electronic help and in general I agree when the machine

beeps that it is a good time to slow down

The downside---not really what you want for track use. Great for everyday roads, though.

Cheers

Paul.

true. but the ACD does more than the AYC on those things. and that's seriously trick!!

The active yaw control on Evos is a little different. Here the main objective is to make you go faster :D

Evos have a powered rear differential with clutch plates on either side. As opposed to a normal diff

which is passive and shares power between the wheels well only if both have grip, the Evo's rear diff

can vary the amount of power applied to each wheel regardless of the amount of slip of either.

It's useful if the car is accelerating with the rear wheels on different surfaces, like tarmac and gravel

where you really want the tarmac wheel to get more power. Also when accelerating out of corners,

applying more power to the outside wheel will help to prevent understeer.

The downside---I presume this is a major contributor to the Evo's 4500-mile service intervals :(

Cheers

Paul.

Best way to imagine how AYC works is to think of a tank, slow the caterpillars on one side to make the other side cause the tank to turn.

it's proper bo'... the Japanese Best Motoring DVD I've got has a full track test and the rally Evo8 racing the tarmac Evo8... the road racers are telling the rally driver off for not using his 'Super AYC'! And he still won the All-Japan rally champs...

Its for big girly girls that can;t drive properly... usually seen on 4wd girly cars, that also have ABS, traction control...... like skylines and evos ;)
