bZ4X 12 volt battery problem

The 12 volt Battery on my 2023 Bz4x keeps losing charge, what is the best charger pack for an ev car

It would help if you explained your problem a little more clearly ...

Our cars, EV and hybrid, have a relatively small 12V auxiliary Battery to keep the car alive while it is Off and enable us to get started again. Modern car electrical systems draw power when the car is off for service functions (e.g. the security system) or just to remain on standby. If you leave the car standing idle for long enough this auxiliary Battery will run flat - it should be perfectly OK for a couple of weeks, but it probably won't be after six.

So, the "best charger pack for an ev car" is the one built into your bZ4X - just run it more often. Toyota recommend a minimum of 1 hour's use per week - the car just needs to be On, it doesn't need to go anywhere.

If you use the car for more than one hour per week and are still having issues you should look at any after-market accessories connected to the car (they really should be connected via switched live so that they are Off when the car is). Failing that, there could be an issue with the Battery, or the car, best addressed via your dealer. I can't recall, offhand, whether there are any TSBs for your model year, but your dealer should be able to check.

If the issue is that you don't use the car enough or want to leave it standing for longer periods then:

  • If you leave the car outside, consider a solar charger connected via the OBD port.
  • If you leave the car inside, consider a mains connected smart charger to keep the battery topped up.
  • If you need to occasionally leave the car in a long stay car park (for example) - or are just plain paranoid like me - consider a small jump start pack to get you going.

My car lives in a garage - if I were to leave it for an extended period I'd use a mains powered smart charger. For peace of mind, I carry a modest jump start pack - Noco Boost Sport (GB20) - a bigger one would do the job just as well (and other jobs as well) but the smaller one is more than enough for a Toyota EV or hybrid.

With mains connected smart charger do you mean the AC EV charger we have at home?

No, I mean a 12V Battery smart charger such as made by CTEK or Noco (and others).

Ive had 2 CHRs and on the day before i was to change my car to a BZ4X it wouldn't start so went and bought a cheap charger to charge over night before going to garage the next day

I have since bought a Noco Battery booster for that same reason if it ever happens to the new car but pls keep it under one of your front seats and not the boot as BZ4X is electric and the CHR (second Gen) had its 12v Battery in the boot had to climb in behind back seats to unlock hatch as it was locked and couldn't be opened from outside (i since found out you can jump start a CHR under the bonnet and in the fusebox)
