Hi I'm hoping someone can help  my after market head unit stopped working in my 03 Yaris and I tried to reinstall the OEM stereo but was unsuccessful. I removed the iso connectors connectors from the after market unit and plugged back into OEM unit and there was power and a beeping noise and a cd I had in there was ejected but the radio simply will not come on. There are 2 connections on the back of the original unit which I plugged the original connections into by the is also one empty connector and I'm not sure if something should be there too. Hope someone can help.

Is it a jbl unit? That requires the extra connection to the amp.

What your seeing in the photo is the original unit from which I disconnected the cables and used an adapter I bought so I could install the Sony xplod unit. I just took the adapter off and connected back to original unit which comes with the car but radio not working. Although there is power because it made a sound and spat out an old cd I just can't get the radio to come on at all.

Doesnt help no.

but. Lets reset. You are replacing the original oem unit with a sony unit?

No as stated in Op i am reverting back to the OEM unit supplied with the car because the sony unit i installed a few years ago stopped functioning.

There's an orange wire in that photo apparently just sticking up - and possibly a blue one too. Doesn't look very OEM.

So are you sure it was just a plug and play conversion? It's easy to forget things done a few years back.

I'm like 95% sure but there is that possiblity you are right because it was quite a while back you could be right I might have cut something then because the third port doesn't have a connector for it. Maybe I'll have to reluctantly take it to an auto electrics place.

you are missing the 3rd plug this connects to the buttons up top have a feel in the void it comes up with the other 2 connectors, you may find the other plug, i also see cut wires - do you have steering wheel controls ? On the adapter for the Sony did it have a black box plugged into it ??

JBL was not a thing back in 2003 on a yaris, tape or cd player with a rare 6 disc option

Hi thanks for your reply this is quite helpful i m going to get back in there and look for the third plug but i cant see how i could have missed it the first time as i did look everywhere. I have a terrible feeling those wires which are sticking out i think its a blue and a yellow one i maybe cut them off the 3rd connector. Im hoping this is not the case tho. the blue wire says REM 3a on it i can remember that much. I will send more photos soon ill get back in there later or tommorow.

no problems, if it comes to it you can replace the radio with another aftermarket one which will be cheaper than messing about and a bill from an auto electrician, not a fan of sony in-car stuff

old sony - did you check the fuse in the back of the radio

Hi I will post a link to the exact head unit I have. The problem I'm having is suddenly when turning the volume up above 20 or when a bluetooth call comes in the whole power to the unit cuts out and then the thing doesn't come back on for ages. It could be mins hrs or even days but surly enough eventually starts working itself. Therefore I have come to the conclusion it has served me well but now it's malfunctioning so I was gonna put the original back in or like you said get another one.

Also if recommending another unit  what would you recommend bearing in mind I need the built in mic functionality to work. That's why I bought this one it has a built in mic which I can make/receive calls via bluetooth and shows all contacts.

Mine had this mic thing and I can talk directly through the head unit no need to wire any physical mic through the back

Most use an external mic, the more budget models may have a built in one

the fault sound like its either over heating or you have a speaker going bad (Speakers cones can rot with age)

Right that does make sense it is prehistoric my car by now although since the new clutch last year drives lovely. Perhaps I should change both door Speakers then.

the car has 4 Speakers if you had a radio in you can adjust the the fader and balance to find the one giving you issues

There is something i just remembered which point to it being the head unit actually and that is that the buttons become sometimes become totally un responsive or the volume and i have to unclip it then clip it back in and it works so theres that too.

an overheat or a speaker fault will cause a shutdown or cause it to become unresponsive

In recent days it's been doing something even more strange the unit has been turning itself off for days like 2 or 3 days and then suddenly over day turning back on. I'm keeping the volume at one level so the volume causing it to shutdown isn't the issue any longer but still does the random shut down for days on end then starts working again.

it's done for, temperatures in the last week have been high

only other thing you can do is check the resistance of the Speakers with a multimeter

Well it's gone through many summers and it went through 40c temperature a few years ago. So you think the stereo is fine and it's the Speakers. I don't even know how to access all the Speakers in this car.

Radios (all electrical items, not just car radios) will develop dry solder joints over the years and operation becomes like yours. There was the case a few years ago of Microsoft Xbox boards developing similar issues and one quick "fix" was to bake the circuit board in an oven, reassemble and then sell the Xbox whilst it was temporarily working.

It was also discovered certain lead based solders used in the space industry caused "whiskers" to grow slowly over the years in space and once satellites were at a certain age, faults (shorts) would develop leading to major failures. It became the practice to transition to lead free solder for long term reliability.

Your radio is 20+ years old, which isn't a bad innings, it's likely it has an intermittent fault and it's probably beyond the economic value to have an engineer check the insides, regretfully.

it's an aftermarket Sony that model is still available so it's no more than 7-10 years old - you can check the speaker resistances from the wiring behind the radio

this is the sort of insight i was looking for because based on your response i think i will  purchase an identical used head unit from eBay and hope for the best. I cant get a new one for obvious reasons i just hope it sorts things or its £50 quid down the drain.
