Corolla 2019 terrible hands free bluetooth call quality

I have a 2019 2.0 Corolla Hybrid.

When on a call, making or receiving, the call quality is terrible. It’s very distorted. Turning the call transmit volume down helps somewhat but then I can barely hear my partner talk.

Toyota have done a software update, packed the microphone out with foam which was a TSB fix and now they’ve fitted a new mic, to no avail.

They now say to me it’s a phone issue. I’m on an 12, my partner a 15. I’ve also tried with my company iPhone which is an 8 and have tried my friends phone which is a 13 pro. They all do the same.

It’s back in the dealers next week.

I've been googling and I can see that some 2019 Toyotas has this very issue with the Panasonic head unit fiited, and was only cured by fitting a later JBL unit. But the Corolla as far as I can see is not mentioned.

Is this a known problem I'm unaware of or has anyone else had similar issues?

Mine is a 2021 with Panasonic. As you might expect, I've never actually been on the receving end of it, but haven't had any complaints in the three years I've had the car. Perhaps everyone I know is just very polite? 😆

It's buried in the settings somewhere, when you go to check for the software version etc.

Bit of an update. The dealers have had it all day, they've called to ask to keep it overnight as they've requested a new system key from Toyota to completely update the infotainment system to see if that cures the issue.

Not sure if they're spinning me a yarn or not, we'll see.
