Coolant hose failure brings me here. [fixed]

Apologies for asking for help in my 2nd post but I'm stuck without a car for a couple of weeks because of zero parts availability.

I've had a 2003 Yaris 1.3 16v for 7 years now & it's been a great car. A few normal wear & tear things have needed replacing - Battery, brakes, exhaust section, alternator (that was a biggish one) - but overall it's been fantastic for an inexpensive first car which I thought I'd have for a couple of years & after all this time I still like the car.

Bit of a problem has developed in that the car has a hole in a coolant pipe & Toyota are saying there isn't one in the UK. It has to be sourced from Japan & the soonest expected arrival date (subject to change) is 03.08.2024!

I'm very surprised there isn't a single one of these things in the UK. It's a dealer only item apparently.

Anyhoo, that is what brings me here. I was wondering if anyone has one, is breaking a similar model or knows of a specialist Toyota breaker who might be able to come up with this hose much sooner than Toyota to get me back on the road.

It's the thick pipe with the white-ish/yellow-ish thing in the middle I'm after.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Andy, just a thought can you not try a patch kit or tape as a temporary fix till a new one becomes available.

The garage it was towed to (which I've used for several jobs over the years) tried the tape fix & that didn't work. Slowed it down a bit but it was  still undrivable. Patch kit didn't come up in the convo. If it was an option I think they would have raised it - they've been pretty straightforward in my dealings with them.

A new one or decent used one appears to be the only solution.

A strategically placed blob of epoxy (aka araldite) can be a very effective temporary fix and something I used to good effect on my own first car, many years ago.

Am I right in guessing that the leak is from the nylon tee piece rather than the hose itself? If so, it's probably cracked. You might be able to remove it and seal the crack temporarily; again, using epoxy. Hose leaks are usually just a small puncture which you can simply clean and cover with a blob.

Red_C,

It's the hose itself. It has perished on the underside & won't take a repair. Another hose is required. A friend tried to fix this & unfortunately only made it worse.

Is there a 'Breaking' section here? Can't see one.

part number is 87209-0D010, Heater hose inlet A

is it the hose or Tee piece that has let go

can you measure all 3 hoses on that Tee - if it comes to it, use a bit of string or strip of paper, wrap it around and then mark it then measure it

flash,

Thanks for the part #. Googling shows a UK supplier  https://toyotaoriginal.com/genuine-toyota/genuine-toyota-heater-hose-872090d010/  I need to call them Monday to confirm they've got one in stock & to see what the P&P is.

It's the hose. The Tee piece is fine, it's the hose that's gone.

The car is at the local garage & I'm away from home until Thursday so I can't measure anything for a few days.

inlet and outlet on the heater core is 17mm so that equates to 17mm I.D and 24mm O.D pipe and they should be able to source a Nylon tee if they can't use the existing tee that is a few clamps, job done

take websites with a large pinch of salt, often they say it is in stock but it's not

Not a breaking section as such, though occasionally members do post in the For Sa!e section, cars which are suitable for spares, etc - https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/forum/23-for-sale/

And that was the case here. I called to check they had it in stock only to be told "We can order one".

  • 2 weeks later...

Spoke to Guildford Toyota today to find out if this pipe was going to be here on the 3rd of August.

The EARLIEST they now expect it is August 23rd & there's no guarantee they can even find one. I spoke to customer service at Toyota UK HQ & they inform me they have no way of checking if any dealer in the UK has this part in stock & all I could do was call every single Toyota dealer's Parts Department & ask if they've got one, which I find unbelievable.

This is getting silly now. Does anyone know of a specialist Toyota breaker?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

If it doesn't have any complicated bends and is relatively straight, make one yourself.

To bring this thread to an end....

Firstly, thanks for all your help & suggestions.

The DIY repair with generic hose was a non starter as the nylon T piece was found to by cracked.

I found a bloke on eBay who was not too far away breaking a Yaris with the correct engine & struck a deal for the entire hose I needed, nylon T piece, both hoses joining at the T & smaller hose coming off that T at 90 degrees.

On the way to get it, no more than 20 minutes away, I got a call from the garage where my car was marooned to inform me my new £126 Toyota hose had just been delivered, the hose which I just been told was not expected for another 2 weeks at the earliest! WTF?

Toyota wouldn't take their hose back as it was a special order. The second hand seller & I had also agreed on a price on the similar hose with nylon T piece located under my US one on the theory that it was the same age as my problem hose, I might need it & it would also be a bugger to find. As he was blameless in this episode I felt honour bound to conclude our deal. So now I had 2 hoses (3 if you count the other hose located under my broken 1 bought as a precaution) where before I couldn't find 1 for love nor money.

Car fixed & running fine.

If anyone needs one of these near impossible to find hoses I'm your man.
