Goog afternoon,

First of all I'm not a really good english speaker so i'll try to be as clear as possible about my "problem". I have seen 2-3 topics on this forum about it but not exactly what i experience.

I own my Yaris IV since 03/2024. I do the same trip every day : 10min in the morning, then 10min in the evening. I barely do longer trip. Until June, everytime i released the throttle, no matter the speed (set appart above 90-100km/h so 50mpg i suppose), i got the EV light on the dashboard and the ICE shutting down, so i was able to drive in electrical. Early June the ICE has started to work more and more so my 10 min trip where i had 80% electrical was now 20/30%. The remaining time where the ICE shutted down was at a stop. I resolved the issue by traveling 60miles with highway then when i came back, my hybrid system worked like i was used to.

Since this morning the "issue" came back. I know what you will tell me : go on the highway and do 60miles but is there any other solution ? 😅I saw the topics with Bmode/GPF cleaning/12V Battery, but i like to understand for myself and try to understand 🫠. If i take the habit to do one longer trip every week, is this a solution? Is this issue actually an issue or me using wrong the car? I'm opened to suggestions !

Thx for any answers and if i wasn't clear, i'll use AI next time for translation 😂

Edit : I don't use AC because i only drive for 10min. The first months I always had 3/4 energy bars, now it goes full charged and won't go down. The only way to go EV is with EV mode below 30km/h or stopping the car.

change in temperature, using the A/C more, A/C is electric so will discharge the main hybrid Battery quicker, a longer run to charge the Battery will help 10 minutes is not long enough

Hi and welcome.
There is no warning lights means there is no problem with your car and the behaviour it’s absolutely normal.
The main reason here is not a gpf cleaning , this is not at least on almost brand new car. The reason is the soc on your batteries, both 12v and the 200v hybrid Battery
When you have your car only used shortly less than 20-30 min each time you are discharging the 12v Battery more than you are charging it while drive ( 10 min only). When you have low 12v Battery the engine will work more often and longer to generate electricity to recharge the batteries, both high voltage and small 12v battery.
Remember your petrol engine is the main source of power. The batteries are storage only.
Another reason for prolonged engine work is to maintain the hybrid battery cells deviation,, when engine is running it can charge or discharge the high voltage battery and doing so will equalised the cells , each cell should maintain specific voltage and all should be very close voltages in between. All that to happen you need time on, something that with your driving style it is not enough.

Thx both for your answers!

So your suggestion Tony would be to drive more frequently more than 30min? Even if the hybrid Battery indicates 100% charge, the behaviour is normal and i just need to drive longer no matter the speed?

Yes. It is time with the "Ready" light on and not so much down to distance. Having said that, a longer distance equals longer time and so, it really is a combination of both. Regular short journeys are your enemy really and not much else...

Also, remember that your ICE (engine) operates in both Otto & Atkinson modes as it sees fit so there will be times when it is more efficient to make use of that variable power rather than the EV mode. This will constantly vary in relation to engine load and the car's "brain" will do all the adjusting for you.

I'm pretty sure the "ready" is always on, issue or not issue. I was looking at it because i read about it on another post.

When you say EV mode you talk about the button? Or only the led "EV" on the dashboard? Because i never press EV mode because i read somewhere that it's better to let the car works on itself.

Thanks though !

Yes I only mean the "EV" light and not the button.

In my opinion, the EV button is a waste of a button since the system will override its use as it sees fit... It is really only of any use if you want to quietly exit or enter a drive or garage but only then if there is sufficient charge in the HV Battery. If not, the system will override its use anyway.

Yes that’s right.
Because you only do very short  journeys 10-15 min an average the car hybrid system has no enough time to recharge the 12v Battery or to maintain the hybrid Battery. When you have the dashboard reading of 100% 🔋actually the real percentage is around 65-79%
Just drive your car as usual and whenever you drive it try to keep it ON in ready mode for as long as possible, for example if you take your half to the shop and you don’t want to go shopping with her you can wait 30 min in the car instead. Also as mentioned depending on your hvac settings, ac use or heating in winter , always when too hot or too cold outside the car will use more it’s engine to take away some stress from the hybrid Battery. All these are typical Toyota hybrid things for preserving ans extending the life of your car batteries.

the new hybrid system does run a little differently as they are now Lithium vs NiMh tbh it is a matter of time till the OP adjusts to the car and the new car gets through its initial break-in period
