Toyota claim that if you leave your ignition keys in the car that you can't accidentally lock them in. Well mine did a 73 redg chr 2.0 excel ,I was having a bite to eat had the windows open the alarm went off so cancelled it with the key remote, closed the windows got out of the car put the key remote  back in the centre console closed the door and one loud click as all the door LOCKED 🔒 with my keys inside 18 miles from home. 🙉

Use the button in the overhead console to disable the interior ultrasonic alarm sensors before you lock the car if you wish to leave a window open.

Call the AA if your still covered by Toyota or an auto locksmith, won't take them long to open it.

The owners manual also warns it is possible to lock the keys inside the vehicle.

That's unfortunate.

Call breakdown and see whether it's covered for recovery back home. If not then have to go home for the other key.

But how the car didn’t recognised the keys are inside?
Something it’s not right here or there are other variables?!
For example the key fob had unfriendly companion next to it that can interfere with it and block the signal., credit card, mobile phone , case with magnet built in, aluminium can, other electronic devices.

So do you have a C-HR (subject of this topic) and a Rav4 (from your profile)??

Or does your profile need amending to include one or both.

Profile updated / previously had rav4 which went back to dealer for ECU problem. Toyota told my Dealer to keep trying to update the ECU to no avail. I insited that Toyota replace the ECU.  Dealer had car for three weeks. Had CHR on loan for the same time.

What a cliff hanger.......

Edit: Responding to below. Have done nearly 15 miles last week walking to the dealer and back. Don't think I can do 2x 18 miles though.

I had tried to lock the doors with keys in the boot and the centre console when I took delivery  of the car just to satisfy my self and the car recognized that  the keys were inside. Sadly not this time . Ther was nothing in the centre console at al Hey Ho, it w.as great day for a walk home.

Been unfortunate event then rather a normal occurrence as I did many times left spare key inside boot or on the back seat in a ladies bag and the car has always recognised that and never locked.
There are always these slight possibility of something goes not as expected.
