My wife and I have just purchased a Yaris hybrid (2021 plate).

We're keen on fitting a towbar for carrying a couple of non-electric bikes. VIN plate shows a 450Kg towing capability. The bike carrier will probably be something like a buzzybee 2.

We've not done this before. My last car was not type-approved for towing so we put the bikes on top of the car. Sadly, neither of us is getting any younger and the bikes appear to be getting heavier!

Specific questions I had were:-

  • The buzzybee has a required clearance of 65mm from the bumper. How can I ensure that any towbar will meet this requirement? I've asked in a couple of places, and just drawn blank looks.
  • We don't have rear parking sensors on the Yaris. Will any of the car systems need reprogramming if a towbar is fitted?
  • The car has no Toyota warranty (ex hire car). Is there any advantage to using a Toyota wiring loom for the installation?
  • What have I missed?

Thanks for any info.
