I am looking to purchase a cargo cover for my 2009 hatchback.  Upon searching online, I found the covers to fairly expensive for what you are getting.  Has anyone tried making their own cargo cover?  I am considering doing it out of plywood and fitting it to the size of the exact footprint in back.  It seems like this would be more cost effective than purchasing an official one.  Has anyone tried anything like this, and are there any downsides that I am not thinking of?

Waterproof Cardboard would be better & easier to shape accurately.

Cycle Shops have ample stock,

do you mean the deck board, they are common on the mk2 not so on the mk3 and the Mk4 one is ultra-expensive

First find a piece of stiff cardboard. I used a cardboard box and shape an exact template. Cut 3/8 or 1/2 plywood to exact shape. 1/2 inch is stronger, cut in half across the whole width. Screw on piano hinge across the cut and  cut a finger hole out near the rear which will enable access to underneath without lifting the whole thing out. Cover with any material suitable. Little stick on pads on the resting points to avoid possible rattles. Good luck 👍

Do you have pictures of the end result?
