I have driven the new Yaris Cross around south London quite a bit recently and have noticed something quite concerning. There are a number of main roads which are 40 or even 50 mph (part of the South Circular, for example) with side roads at 30 or even 20.  A few of these side roads have the speed limit pointing towards the main road and the car is picking these up and bonging at me.  My wife regularly drives past a primary school which has a sign nearby showing 20mph when there are lights flashing (when the kids are arriving and leaving).  Fair enough, but the car picks up the 20 all the time of course, and so she is bonged at for ages even  a mile or two after passing the school at midday.  Surely Toyota must be aware of how annoying these warnings are.  It's one thing to be told you're doing something wrong, but quite another to be plagued by incorrect bonging!

Another reason to keep my 2020 Yaris even longer 😁

Yeah mine has enough annoyances, I don't need any more!

I'm not sure about the legality of changing how the car works via OTA firmware updates though; Imagine  one day you wake up and suddenly the cruise control and reverse camera are gated behind a subscription!

It's one reason I really aren't a fan of any sort of OTA updates, esp. as I don't trust the security of them.

I know people who experienced this when they had a Tesla, as they'd often make massive changes between updates and the whole interface would have changed overnight!

Annoyingly and unfortunately it's the way of the world at the moment on anything that has software. Until the Gov get their into gear and come up with some legislation stopping companies changing things from the original purchased item and how it worked nothing you can do about it. All you can do is rely on the companies good will and reputation and just hope they don't want to tarnish it.

Plenty of example of things getting gated behind a paywall after it has been purchased and out for a while or even worse becoming bricked as the company wanted to release a new version so they kill the server it needs to connect to function and this then renders the device inoperable.

I’m sure I set my limiter to a couple of miles over the actual limit, can you still do this on the new version?

I think you can but don’t know if it doesn’t reset itself at ignition on.  The warning buzzer in the latest Seat something or other is like that gong on the beginning of one of those Rank films.  The Toyota one is luxurious by comparison.

Yes you can, but it'll still bong at you if you exceed the actual limit.

The speed limit warning bong can’t be set to over the actual limit in the 24 version.
The physical speed limiter can be set to any speed you like.

Which was built before July 24, and didn't have ISA as a mandatory fitment. Please keep up.

So, switch it off, then. A few quick button presses and mine is blissfully silent, every time.

If anyone in this community has access to the bong legislation please post !

It's a European regulation that officially doesn't apply to the UK (confirmed by Dept of Whatever), however it's easier to follow regs and manufacturers don't want separate settings for uk and euro cars in view of small number of cars sold here by euro / world manufacturers.

Instead of bongs, it should shout out “ 3 points” or “ awareness course “ ..

Would like to know if the anti bong brigade turn of the speed camera alerts as well?

Parts of "A" roads in Wales are 20mph, the yaris Cross monstrosity of ours is chiming all the time, hopefully it will wear out.

My wife is adamant that the collision detection, where it thinks it knows better than the driver when to brake, was not on the one she test drove. I am glad it is her car.

Currently for the first half of 2024, the UK is the second largest market in Europe for new cars - behind Germany but ahead of France:

It's not about the numbers sold but about duplicating maintenance and testing teams to keep both firmware versions deployed to the customers. This is a huge cost and with savings on the stupid indoor light I highly doubt anyone from Toyota would decide to release a separate software branch just for UK market

Personally, no- and ironically, I would like those to be a little louder.

I turn mine off most of the time.  It’s part of a start up procedure of setting my sat nav for work (keeps an eye on traffic), turning off traffic sign and lane departure and handbrake hold on.   I leave them on for road trips and I really like the proactive predictive thingy.

Not sure why my last post should have earned a 'confused' reaction; like so many, I find the RSA alerts excessive and highly annoying, so they go off. But why would I turn off the gentle speed camera warning sound? It is a gentle and rapid 'boop-boop' sound, low in volume and repeated only once. Not annoying and as I said, I would prefer that one to be a little louder if anything.

Or am I just supposed to detest ALL sounds..?

Which is the same tone and volume of the other warnings. I think it’s just that we don’t like being told off for going too fast, but we don’t mind being warned about the consequences of speeding.

I wouldn't say that it is is the same- a quick, soft double beep, which isn't always easy to hear if there is road noise or if music is on, vs. the insistent bonging of the RSA warning? Not the same at all.
