I am considering buying a solar trickle charger that charges through the OBD connector in the car instead of having to connect it straight or he Battery. Does anyone have any experience of these if they are safe to use, only looking to use it while my car is parked up for 2 weeks in an outside airport car park to keep the Battery topped up, was looking at the AA 4.8W trickle  charger to use. Will this work fine to be plugged in for 2 weeks and will it affect anything else in the car?

Thanks

Our choice would be to charge the 12v Battery up the day before you set off and  carry one of the many Jump Starters that you can buy, some for just a little more than one of those solar devices.  They say you can use a Jump Start on the 12v Battery of a Hybrid car.

A Jump Starter in the boot will always be available as they hold their change for many months.  Used ours  for many years and worth every penny, would never be without one.

I have the AA 4.8W solar charger. I bought it as an experiment, just to see if they are as efficient as we are led to believe. After all, being AA it should do the job. Shouldn't it?

Well, yes it does ............ sort of.

If the sky has little cloud cover and the sun is strong and long, I think it would top up what the Battery discharges under normal parked conditions. At best it charges between 0.3 to 0.4 amps.

Under cloudy conditions, that drops off considerably.

If your Battery is in tip-top condition, and only has a minimal discharge rate, then Mr AA 4.8 should keep your Battery topped up enough for when you return, provided it has seen enough sunny days....... and it's flat on the dash ........ and facing south ....

However, if you have a charged up jump pack, tuck that into the boot area somewhere - just in case.

I have one of the AA 4.8 solar chargers. I have used it once on the previous Yaris Cross when I left it parked up for 5 days. The car started fine when I got back to it. I also used it once on the previous Corolla - again, no problem when I got back to the car. I presume that, as long as there is some someshine, some charge will go into the Battery.  Both times I used the OBD connector. I actually use the solar charger more for charging up the lawnmower Battery! (But I do use the Battery clips. For some reason, the lawnmower has not got an OBD socket 😄).

All power ranges solar chargers works ok when there is direct sunlight, when there isn’t they all start to lose charge and with the time if the car is parked for weeks, months the Battery may be depleted.
My neighbour been away for 6 months, had a 20w obd connected solar charger which was maintained the Battery just fine during the summer but then after in October the Battery went low, thankfully their car has the option to use traction battery power to maintain 12v battery, this is how I understood the solars aren’t any good when clouds are coming 🌧🪫

They are considered safe and there's really not much more you can do to keep it alive, apart from disabling the keyless entry system to reduce the draw a little bit. As per other comments, if you want a strong assurance that the car will be ready to take you home without having to wait for breakdown assist, there's no substitute for a jumper pack. First priority for me would be breakdown cover, followed by the jumper pack and solar panel last.

A solar panel is more of a maintenance strategy, to try and save the Battery from damage as a result of going flat and the subsequent cost of replacing it. This is where the solar panel outshines (sorry) the jumper pack, not as a safety net.
