Replacement Tyres - Which Ones ?

Hi All

After 40,000 miles the original Dunlop SP200E tyres on my D4D Avensis are down to 3mm, so its time for replacement. Question is with what ? - have others any experince of alternative brands (Michelin, Pirelli, Metzeler, Bridgestone etc), or is there a website that compares them.

Thanks in advance

If it was up to me, I'd put Good Year Eagle Venturas on .

I use them on my Audi and they last really well, grip in ANY conditions. I tend not to hang about in that car and it's never even stepped out on me !

Michellins tend to last the longest, but I tend to find that it's better the devil you know with tyres, afterall a different type might improve in certain areas but then be worse in others, at least if you have the same again you know what there going to be like.

BTW - why are you changing them at 3mm, you can legally drive them until there down to 1.6 and until they get down to about 2mm down appear to drive any differently in normal use.

In the last year I've had to replace all my tyres. 3 Michelins and one Dunlop. After the speed at which the Dunlop tyre has worn-out I'm only ever going to put Michelins on the car (it's what the car came with anyway).

The Dunlop tyre is about a year old and is now down to the indicators. I know the Michelins are more expensive, but at least I don't have to go replacing them every 12 months.

It depends on the kind of yor driving, the speed you reach,if travel more in the city or do more trips on highways. If you travel on highways with high speeds, you need tyres with high speed rate,so they will not overheat. But if you drive solely in the city streets, you will probably need tyres that heat up quickly and have immediate respond! Also, all tha brands are good!

Hi All

Many thanks for all the replies. I've decided to go for the Michelins as they are only slightly more expensive than the Dunlops, but get very good reviews everywhere I've looked. They also happen to sponsor my favourite sport (F1), so its payback time for them

I'm replacing them now at 3mm as they will soon be illegal, and changing tyres in the middle of winter is not my idea of fun. Plus her indoors will soon be wittering about Xma ( god help me :crybaby: )

Cheers

the only thing I've found with michelins is they last long because they are hard so are a bit more noisy on the road and if the cars pushed to the limits because they're harder tend to let go earlier

Quick update

Got the Michelins fitted today. Price wise they were about £10 more expensive than the Dunlops, but when I went to pay I got a leaflet giving me £20 back from Michelin ! - apparently its a promotion they are running to the end of this month.

First impressions are that they are slightly more noisy below 30mph, but grip levels much the same

Cheers

People are talking about I have Michelins or any other kind of mark.

It's not only the mark that's important. Within an mark there are different tires. For example michelin has the energy and the premacy line-up both are different tires for different driving.

I agree with toyosupra on the bridgestones, it's what the carina came standard with.

The Potenza RE720 is a high perfomance tire with lots of grip but lower durability. This where the tires that i had first under the Carina GTi. But they had to be renewed to fast en where noisy.

So i went for the Turanza series ER30. After 30000km there is still 4mm on the tread. And I drive sporty, the carina has 160 bhp on the front wheels.

Also Kourini says something about the speed rating on the tire. I doesn't depend on the speed you actually drive! It depends on the speed the car is able to reach (legal requirment).

I have on my 04 Avensis standard tyres Bridgestone ER30 and the tyres SUCKS!!! They have no grip in all conditions and I am feeling me unsafe in the car. Before I had on my Corolla Dunlops 9000 and they were much, much better. So I will replace the ER30 with Potenza RE720 or pole position or Dunlop Sportmaxx in 17 inch size.

I've been on the nurburgring with these tires and they performed good. They have so much grip the tires start to bounce looking for grip! And I had the RE720 on before the ER30 and they where much noisier but had even more grip.

Also experiment with the tire pressure 0.2 bar doesn't seem like much but its big difference.

Btw i drive a carina GTI with 175bhp on the front wheels and tried michelin and Pirelli as well. Michelin was the best but where also 30-40% more expensive then the Bridgestone. The gain ws in the durablity area not in the grip!

And i also use these tires in the summertime during the winter i have wintertires underneath.
