Engine Bay Smoke

Hello All, 

Toyota Verso 1.6D (dreaded BMW engine). 64 plate / 86k / full toyota service history

In the last couple of weeks I have noticed that the car at end of a journey 'smells' very hot (burning/plasticy/oily)

When opening the bonnet I am greeted with a plume of pale smoke coming from behind the engine near the bulkhead.

This doesn't happen every journey, so i'm a bit puzzled. 

Most recent trip when this happened was around 15 miles on a dual carriageway.

Been to local dealer today for diagnosis where the car sat in the car park unchecked. The basis of the diagnosis was "we had one of these in recently and and its the dpf regen". 

Having owned the car since new, I've only noticed this in the past few weeks. I would have thought I would have seen this before during the past 9 years?

Do any of you have experience of this please?

Not familiar with the engine, but could it be the valve cover gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold?
