Hi

I've heard rumours that some of the yaris models in the UK have standard cvt transmissions.

I was wondering if anyone could shine some light on this.

I have a 2021 yaris cross and when I bought it I was told it's a cvt not an e-cvt.

I thought all toyotas at least semi recent used e-cvt.

Could anyone confirm this please.

3rd generation non-hybrid petrol autos used a CVT. 3rd and 4th generation hybrids use an eCVT.

Thanks.

So all the hybrid models should have an e-cvt? Over a standard cvt?

I wonder why they told me mines was a regular cvt.

It's a 2021 hybrid. Does the yaris cross maybe still use a regular cvt? and that's why they told me that.

Hybrid Synergy Drive, eCVT, differential, epicyclic gear set, power split device... Call it what you want... Either way it's highly unlikely a salesman knows anything about the cars they sell (not just Toyota).

Frostyballs on the other hand knows a lot 🙂

Only petrol versions for non-UK markets where it was offered (eg. in Poland it was available with non-hybrid 125hp manual or Multidrive S = CVT gearbox). With the new Yaris Cross there are only hybrids left as well.

Cheers, I appreciate the comments.

Was just worried it may be one of the older belt driven ones.

The new Yaris cross and Yaris have what's called a direct shift CVT. It has the steel belt but unlike other CVTs it has a first gear/launch gear.

From research I done it seems the addition of the launch gear will make these CVTs a solid reliable transmission

Not on the hybrids - All hybrids use the HSD, aka *blarg* eCVT

The CVT's are only for the non-hybrid automatics, and they're not sold at all in the UK (Or Ireland AFAIK!)

This movie is 3 year old and even in the animation it shows 3rd gen vs 4th gen Yaris comparison.

So I have been researching the wrong transmission 😮

Below is one off the videos which led me to believe the hybrid cross and Yaris have the direct shift CVT

Looks like I need to do some more homework on this. Sorry for the wrong information.

So what transmission to we have in new hybrids

UK technical information extracted from Toyota UK media site, clearly stating the Cross has an e-CVT:

If hybrid it is a eCVT

Non hybrid it is a CVT only

It depends on the market, to be fair. I don't know so much about Yaris's, but I'm sure Corolla sells in other markets as a non-Hybrid vehicle with traditional CVT and they probably also fit the newer version with the take-off gear.

eCVT is a marriage of an epicyclic gearbox (the type used in tanks for a long time) and a couple of motors, so it can only work with Hybrids and it's also the only type of transmission you will find in any Toyota hybrid, as far as I'm aware.

Yes, it's very clever and is to my knowledge the only 'gearbox' that doesn't rely on clamp-friction in some way to change 'gears'!

Aside from the above, some Asian/South American markets have a different bigger Yaris Cross to Europe:

No. Developed by Daihatsu and launched in 2023. Built in Indonesia and exported to 25 Asian/South American countries.

Not much bigger that eu version but totally different, and smaller that Corolla cross.
Toyota offers difficult type automatic transmission in other models available  in USA , they called hybrids max where petrol turbo engine is mounted to the standard automatic transmission with 6 speeds and torque converter.

And another similar set up for suv and pick up trucks

This Is a UK forum ALL Mk4 Yaris and Yaris Cross models are 1.5 Hybrid only

the EU has the 1.0 and 1.5 in manual and CVT (Non hybrid)

Nothing wrong with the Aisin CVT boxes just keep on top of fluid changes, Dont even compare them to the Nissan/Jatco CVT that likes to grenade
